Chapter 10 - The Vow (Happy Ending)

One year later.

The cathedral bells of St. Michael's rang out across the city, their joyous chimes echoing through the clear blue sky.

Inside the grand church, white roses lined every aisle. Members of the reshaped, legitimate Romano family, friends, and staff—including a smiling Martha, who had been fully exonerated and retained as head of household—sat in the pews, watching the ceremony.

I stood at the altar in a lace wedding gown that flowed like liquid silk around me. My hands were held firmly in Alessio’s, who looked impossibly handsome in his black tuxedo, his eyes shining with unshakeable devotion.

Standing right beside us was little fifteen-month-old Leo, dressed in a tiny matching suit, holding a velvet pillow with our wedding rings. He was healthy, strong, and walking on his own two feet, babbling happily as he watched his father and me.

The priest smiled at us both. "Alessio, do you take Clara to be your lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"

Alessio looked down at me, his grip tightening gently on my hands. "I do. I promise to protect her, to honor her, and to love her with every breath in my body for the rest of my life."

"And do you, Clara," the priest turned to me, "take Alessio to be your lawful wedded husband?"

I looked into the eyes of the man who had gone from a terrifying mafia boss pointing a gun in the dark to the gentlest, most loving husband and father imaginable.

"I do," I said clearly, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "With all my heart."

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared with a warm smile. "You may kiss the bride."

Alessio didn't wait a second. He pulled me close by my waist and lifted me slightly off my feet, kissing me with a passion that made the whole world melt away. The cathedral erupted into cheers and applause.

When he set me down, Leo giggled and reached his arms up. Alessio picked up our son with one arm and wrapped his other arm around my waist.

Together, the three of us turned to face the cheering crowd.

As we walked down the aisle together—hand in hand, family complete—I looked down at the blue sapphire pendant resting against my chest. What had begun as a nightmare in a storm-swept nursery, under the cold barrel of a gun, had led me to the greatest love and highest purpose of my life.

The shadows were gone. The traitor was defeated. And our future was brighter than the sun.
