Chapter 8 - The Gift of Blood

Three months passed.
The storm that had nearly torn the Moretti family apart had faded into a distant memory, replaced by a sense of peace the estate had never known in its long history.
The high stone walls surrounding the property were still guarded by Rocco’s loyal men, but the atmosphere inside had transformed completely. The sound of children’s laughter now echoed through the high marble halls that had once been silent as a tomb.
Clara Vance had formally accepted Rocco’s invitation to stay at the estate as Leo’s primary caretaker and co-guardian. Rocco had ensured her financial independence, purchasing a beautiful private cottage on the estate grounds for her, though she spent most of her days in the main house, raising the little boy alongside Rocco.
Leo was thriving. His tiny cheeks had grown chubby, his dark eyes bright and full of curiosity, reflecting the strong, noble features of his father.
On a warm afternoon, Rocco sat in his study. The heavy leather folders filled with criminal ledgers were gone, replaced by legal papers establishing legitimate charitable foundations and educational trusts.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
“Come in,” Rocco called out.
Elena Bellini entered, holding a silver tray with fresh espresso. Behind her, Sophia walked in shyly, carrying a school folder.
“Mr. Moretti,” Elena said warmly, setting the tray on the mahogany desk. “Sophia wanted to show you her report card.”
Rocco smiled, pushing his legal papers aside and gesturing for Sophia to come closer. “Let me see, little girl.”
Sophia proudly handed over the paper. Rocco scanned the page—straight A’s across every subject, with special praise from her teachers for her artistic talent and kindness to her classmates.
“Outstanding,” Rocco praised, looking up at her with genuine pride. “I knew you were brilliant the night you walked into my dining room.”
“It’s thanks to you, sir,” Elena said softly, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Because of the private school tuition you provided, Sophia is getting an education we could have only dreamed of.”
Rocco shook his head, leaning forward on his desk. “Elena, you don't owe me anything. Your daughter saved my son’s life. There is no amount of money or tuition that could ever repay that debt.”
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick document bound in dark blue leather. He slid it across the desk toward Elena.
Elena hesitated. “What is this, Mr. Moretti?”
“Open it,” Rocco said gently.
Elena opened the folder, her eyes scanning the official legal language at the top of the page. As she read, her hands began to tremble, and a quiet gasp escaped her lips.
“This... this is a deed,” Elena whispered, looking up in disbelief. “To the lakeside villa in the north valley?”
“It is,” Rocco confirmed with a soft nod. “Fully paid, with a trust fund that ensures you and Sophia will never have to work another day in your lives. It includes full ownership of the property, college funds for Sophia, and permanent security detail provided by my personal guard.”
Elena shook her head, tears of overwhelming emotion springing to her eyes. “Mr. Moretti... no... this is too much! We were just doing what was right!”
“And doing what was right saved the Moretti bloodline,” Rocco said firmly, standing up and coming around the desk. He placed a warm, fatherly hand on Sophia’s head. “Sophia didn't just find a baby in the trash that night, Elena. She restored my soul. She reminded me of what it means to be a human being.”

Sophia looked up at Rocco, her eyes wide. “Does this mean we’re family now?”
Rocco crouched down, meeting the young girl’s gaze. “You have been family since the moment you stepped onto my cold marble floor carrying my son, Sophia. You will always have a place at this table.”
