Chapter 6 - Confrontation at Dawn

By the time the motorcade returned to the Moretti mansion, the sky was beginning to streak with the soft gray light of early dawn. The rain had slowed to a gentle drizzle, leaving the manicured lawns and marble statues gleaming like polished silver under the rising morning sun.
Clara Vance stepped through the massive front doors of the mansion, wrapped in a thick wool coat Rocco had given her. She looked around the staggering grandeur of the foyer—the soaring ceilings, the sparkling crystal chandeliers, the priceless artwork—feeling entirely out of place.
“This way,” Rocco said gently, guiding her up the grand double staircase.
They walked down the silent hall of the east wing toward the nursery. Two heavy guards bowed their heads respectfully as Rocco approached, stepping aside to open the heavy mahogany doors.
Inside, the room was warm and peaceful.
Sophia was fast asleep in an armchair near the corner, a soft knitted blanket tucked around her shoulders. Elena sat in a chair beside her, gently rocking the wooden crib with one hand.
When the door opened, Elena stood up quickly, bowing slightly. “Mr. Moretti.”
“Elena,” Rocco nodded gratefully. “This is Clara.”
Clara didn't hesitate. She rushed across the room, her hands trembling as she reached down into the crib. There lay little Leo, fast asleep, his tiny chest rising softly, a faint dusting of dark hair framing his perfect face.
She collapsed to her knees beside the crib, burying her face in her hands, weeping softly so as not to wake him. “He’s safe... oh God, he’s safe...”
Rocco stood in the doorway, watching the scene with a quiet intensity he had never experienced before. For years, this house had been a fortress of power, fear, and cold calculation. But in a single night, the innocence of a young girl and the courage of a mother had transformed his dark world.
Thomas stepped up beside Rocco, whispering under his breath. “Boss. The elders have gathered downstairs. Word leaked that you captured Vincenzo. They are demanding an explanation.”
Rocco’s eyes hardened, the softness vanishing from his features as he stepped back out into the hallway. “Have they seen Valentina?”
“Not yet. She and Vincenzo are still being held in the lower security rooms.”
“Good,” Rocco said, buttoning his suit jacket. “Let’s go show the elders what real treason looks like.”
In the main grand hall, eight elderly men dressed in expensive suits sat along the marble conference table. These were the capos and asset managers who controlled the legal and illegal enterprises of the Moretti network. They were murmuring anxiously among themselves, their faces tight with concern.
When Rocco entered the room, the heavy oak doors slamming behind him, the entire hall fell dead silent.
“Rocco!” one of the senior capos, an elderly man named Bernardo, spoke up, standing up from his chair. “What is the meaning of this lockdown? We hear rumors that Don Vincenzo was dragged onto the property in chains! You cannot treat an elder of this family like a common criminal!”
Rocco didn't answer immediately. He walked to the head of the table, resting his hands on the carved back of his leather chair.
“Vincenzo isn't an elder, Bernardo,” Rocco said, his voice echoing with terrifying authority. “He is a traitor. And so was my wife.”
Rocco gestured to the guards standing at the side entrance. The heavy metal doors swung open, and two guards pushed Vincenzo and Valentina into the room.
Valentina’s silk robe was ruined, her hair wild, her eyes frantic with desperation. Vincenzo looked broken, leaning heavily on a guard’s shoulder without his silver cane.
A collective shockwave rippled through the seated elders.
“What is this madness?” Bernardo gasped.
“Thomas,” Rocco commanded. “Show them.”
Thomas activated the large digital projector mounted on the wall. High-definition images of the hospital ledgers, decrypted financial wire transfers to offshore accounts, and security footage of Valentina disabling the gate codes filled the screen.
“For five years,” Rocco explained to the silent room, “these two stole my children’s biological rights. They faked a death. They paid off medical staff. And last night, when the surrogate tried to bring my living son home, Valentina tied a newborn child inside a plastic trash bag and threw him into the rain to protect her financial shares.”
Gasps of horror erupted across the table. Even the hardened old men of the syndicate, seasoned in street violence and corporate warfare, looked disgusted. In their world, rules existed. Family blood was sacred. Throwing a newborn child into a trash bin was an unforgivable breach of honor.
Bernardo turned his cold gaze onto Vincenzo. “Is this true, Vincenzo?”
Vincenzo opened his mouth to lie, but looking at the undeniable evidence projected on the wall—and the lethal promise in Rocco’s dark eyes—his shoulders slumped. He said nothing.

Bernardo looked back at Rocco, dropping his head in a gesture of absolute submission.
“The board yields to your judgment, Don Rocco,” Bernardo announced solemnely. “How do you wish to dispose of the traitors?”
