Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Siege

Over the next two weeks, the Whitmore estate transformed from a quiet luxury mansion into a war room.

Laptops, server racks, and high-speed encrypted satellite dishes were set up in the main library. Federal agents, forensic accountants, and private investigators moved through the halls like shadows.

Through it all, Rosa and Lily remained at the center of Marcus’s world.

Despite the high-stakes financial warfare raging around him, Marcus insisted on keeping dinner times sacred. Every evening at 6:30 PM, no matter how many millions were at stake, Marcus closed his laptop, sat at the dining room table with Rosa and Lily, and listened to Lily tell stories about her colored drawings.

"Look, Mr. Mark!" Lily cheered one evening, holding up a piece of paper. "I drew you with a sword and a cape fighting the bad man!"

Marcus took the drawing, holding it like a priceless piece of fine art. "This is going directly into my vault, Lily. It’s better than a knight’s armor."

Rosa watched them from across the table, her heart swelling with an emotion she didn't dare name. For years, she had viewed Marcus as a distant, powerful billionaire who lived in a completely different universe. But seeing him laugh with Lily, seeing the tenderness in his eyes when he looked at her daughter, erased the boundaries of wealth and status.

However, the peace was short-lived.

On a rainy Thursday morning, Marcus received a devastating blow. Victoria’s hidden conspirators within the board of directors at Whitmore Logistics launched a hostile takeover.

Using forged documents provided by Victoria before her flight, the board claimed that Marcus was "mentally unfit" to lead due to the traumatic home invasion and attempted to strip him of his CEO title during an emergency shareholder meeting in Chicago.

"If they take the company, they gain control of the proprietary shipping network," Marcus told his legal team in the library. "That network handles critical medical supplies for over forty states. Victoria’s syndicate wants to turn it into a smuggling pipeline."

"We need to go to Chicago," Captain Vance said. "The meeting is at 2:00 PM today. But going into the city is risky, Marcus. Victoria might have hitmen waiting."

"I don't care," Marcus growled, slipping into a sharp navy suit. "I built that company with my blood. I won't let her tear it down."

"I'm coming with you," Rosa suddenly spoke up from the doorway.

Marcus turned, surprised. "Rosa, no. It's too dangerous."

"You need someone who saw Victoria in this house, Marcus," Rosa said firmly, stepping forward with an uncharacteristic strength in her stance. "I found her at your safe. I heard her phone calls. I can give a sworn testimony to the board and the federal agents attending. They won't believe just corporate lawyers—they need the eye-witness who caught her red-handed."

Marcus looked at Rosa, mesmerized by her bravery. The quiet maid who used to bow her head was stepping directly into the line of fire for him.

"Alright," Marcus agreed softly. "Together."

Two hours later, a motorcade of armored SUVs pulled up to the glittering glass tower of Whitmore Logistics in downtown Chicago.

Inside the executive boardroom on the 50th floor, the atmosphere was suffocating. Twelve wealthy board members sat around a massive glass table, led by Arthur Pendelton, a greedy senior director who had secretly taken bribes from Victoria.

"Marcus is unstable," Pendelton was telling the room as the doors burst open. "He is dragging this company into criminal scandals—"

"The only scandal here, Arthur, is your treason," Marcus’s voice cut through the room like a razor.

Marcus walked in, flanked by Captain Vance and Rosa. The board members gasped, whispering among themselves.

Pendelton sneered. "Marcus. You shouldn't be here. And who is this? You bring your housemaid to an executive board vote? This proves your mental decline!"

Rosa didn't flinch. She stepped right up to the head of the table, pulling a flash drive from her purse and placing it onto the digital projector hub.

"My name is Rosa Delgado," she declared loudly, her voice clear and unwavering. "I worked at the Whitmore estate for six years. And three weeks ago, I watched Victoria Hargrove attempt to open Mr. Whitmore's safe using stolen security codes. Here is the audio recording I captured on my phone when she discussed selling corporate shares to offshore entities."

The room erupted. The digital screens around the boardroom displayed audio waveforms and decrypted text messages that Rosa’s phone had caught while cleaning the east wing.

Pendelton’s face turned bright red. "This is absurd! Unverified maid gossip!"

"It's not gossip, Arthur," a loud voice announced from the back of the room.

Two lead agents from the FBI stepped in, holding federal arrest warrants. "Arthur Pendelton, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit extortion, and high treason under federal trade laws."

As federal agents handcuffed Pendelton, the rest of the board immediately caved, voting unanimously to reaffirm Marcus as Chairman and CEO with absolute control.

Marcus stood at the top of the tower, victory secured. But as he looked at Rosa, standing proudly beside him, he realized the victory meant nothing without her.

Suddenly, Marcus’s phone buzzed. It was an encrypted video text from an unknown number.

Marcus opened it. His heart stopped.

The video showed the exterior of the Whitmore estate. A sinister voiceover, distorted by a scrambler, whispered:

"You won the boardroom, Marcus. But you left your precious little superhero guarded by men who take my money. You have one hour to surrender all legal assets, or the toddler dies."
