Chapter 4 - The Transformation

The next afternoon, Belladonna House was transformed into a bustling war room.

Dozens of armed men patrolled the perimeter grounds, while top intelligence analysts set up computer banks in the mansion’s grand library. Meanwhile, inside the master dressing suite, a team of elite Italian stylists, makeup artists, and hair designers were working on me under the strict direction of Madame Genevieve, the most exclusive designer in the underground fashion world.

"No, no, no!" Genevieve barked at an assistant holding up a tight, frilly pink gown. "She is not a delicate porcelain doll! Look at her curves! Look at those hips, that bust, those strong shoulders! She is a goddess of war! Bring out the emerald velvet gown from the Milan runway collection!"

I sat in front of the vanity mirror, watching in disbelief as my reflection changed.

They styled my long brown hair into cascading, glamorous waves that fell over my shoulders like silk. My face was expertly sculpted with makeup that highlighted my sharp cheekbones and framed my dark, expressive eyes.

When they helped me slip into the deep emerald velvet gown, I gasped. The dress fit my voluptuous body like a glove. It had a modest yet alluring sweetheart neckline that gracefully masked the bandage on my left arm while accentuating my collarbone. Long velvet sleeves flowed down to my wrists, and a thigh-high slit gave the heavy gown a touch of dangerous elegance.

To top it off, Vincent himself walked into the dressing room carrying a black velvet box.

The stylists quickly bowed and exited the room, leaving us alone once again.

Vincent stood behind me in the mirror, wearing a tailored black tuxedo with an emerald green silk pocket square that perfectly matched my gown. The contrast between us—his towering, dark, masculine intensity and my vibrant, curvy elegance—was striking.

"You look..." Vincent paused, his voice rough. "You look extraordinary, Clara."

"I feel like an imposter," I admitted, looking down at my reflection. "Last night I was scrubbing wine stains out of carpets for minimum wage. Tonight I'm wearing a dress that probably costs more than my entire life's earnings."

"Value isn't determined by a price tag, Clara," Vincent said softly. He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a jaw-dropping necklace made of solid white gold, embedded with dark green emeralds and brilliant diamonds. And suspended right in the center of the brilliant jewels was my old, tarnished silver locket.

He had framed my mother’s locket inside a multi-million-dollar piece of high jewelry.

"You had it modified?" I asked softly, my hand flying to my chest.

"I had my master jeweler set it inside the Moretti Family Crest," Vincent explained, stepping closer to wrap the necklace around my neck. His warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of my throat, sending an electric spark through my veins. "Tonight, you wear your mother's legacy and my protection around your neck. Let the DeMarcos try to strip it from you."

I turned around to face him. The physical proximity between us was overwhelming. I could hear the steady beat of his heart under his suit jacket.

"Why are you doing all of this for me, Vincent?" I asked, searching his dark eyes. "Is it really just because of an old debt your mother owed mine?"

Vincent was quiet for a long moment. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping my chin, forcing me to look up into his intense gaze.

"When I walked into that ballroom last night," Vincent murmured, "I saw a room full of cowards watching a cruel woman abuse her power. And then I saw you. You were bleeding, outnumbered, and surrounded by billionaires, yet your eyes never lost their fire. You didn't kneel. You didn't beg."

He leaned in slightly, his thumb gently stroking my bottom lip.

"I didn't just see Elena's daughter," he whispered softly. "I saw the strongest woman I have ever met."

My heart did a violent flip in my chest. Before I could say another word, Marco tapped on the open door frame.

"Don Vincent, the armored convoy is ready. The Syndicate Council has assembled at the Grand Casino Vault. Julian and Vivian DeMarco are already there... and they brought fifty armed guards."

Vincent’s soft expression vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, lethal calm. He offered me his arm.

"Ready to break some rules, Miss Vance?"

I took his arm, locking my fingers into his strong grip. "Lead the way, Boss."
