Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

The following morning, Nathan Mercer sat in his penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park, pouring himself a glass of expensive scotch as he waited for the news that Maria had fled and Daniel had spiraled into chaos. Instead, his heavy front door was violently breached. Four federal agents, flanked by state troopers, swarmed into the apartment with weapons drawn, presenting a federal arrest warrant for felony extortion, illegal wiretapping, corporate espionage, and witness tampering.

Nathan was dragged out of his building in handcuffs, paraded through a wall of flashing news cameras. Daniel had personally arranged for every major media outlet in the city to be present for the arrest. As Nathan was shoved into the back of a police cruiser, he caught sight of Daniel standing across the street beside his black SUV. The arrogance Nathan had carried for years utterly evaporated, replaced by sheer panic as he realized he had poked a sleeping dragon who was no longer afraid to burn everything down to protect what he loved.

Simultaneously, Daniel’s legal army filed sweeping restraining orders and federal lawsuits against Maria’s ex-fiancé, entangling him in so many severe legal battles that setting foot in New York would result in his immediate arrest. The dark shadow that had haunted Maria’s life for three agonizing years was utterly destroyed in less than twenty-four hours through the absolute, unyielding power of Daniel’s shield.

That evening, when Daniel returned to the estate, Maria met him in the grand foyer. She didn't offer a formal thank you; she simply stepped forward, threw her arms around his neck, and wept tears of overwhelming relief and safety. Daniel held her securely against his chest, rubbing her back as her shoulders shook.

“Thank you,” she whispered over and over again into his shoulder. “Thank you for saving us.”

Daniel looked over her shoulder and saw Lily standing near the bottom of the grand staircase, holding her purple stuffed dinosaur and smiling up at them. “You saved me first, Maria,” Daniel replied softly. “You saved me first.”
