Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gate

The board voted overwhelmingly in Daniel's favor, dealing a crushing, decisive blow to Nathan Mercer and Victor Sterling. But cornered men with nothing left to lose are the most dangerous predators. Realizing he could never defeat Daniel in the financial arena, Nathan turned his desperation toward a far darker, more personal strategy. He knew that the sole reason Daniel’s cold exterior had cracked was the presence of Maria and her little girl.
Nathan hired a sleazy private investigator to stalk the perimeter of the Westchester estate, using long-range lenses to photograph Maria, Lily, and Daniel playing in the gardens.
One heavy autumn afternoon, as Maria was packing up her bags to take Lily to a routine pediatric appointment, she found a blank manila envelope tucked under the windshield wiper of her sedan. She opened it, her heart plummeting into her stomach. Inside were high-resolution photographs of her and Lily playing in the yard, accompanied by a typed note: “Leave the Hale house by tonight, or the press receives your full background file. Tell Daniel you quit, or your daughter’s name and location will be broadcast across every news network in New York.”
Maria’s breath hitched, a wave of familiar horror crashing over her. Her past was a dark shadow she had worked tirelessly to escape. Before moving to New York, she had fled a controlling, abusive ex-fiancé who had used his political connections in her home state to try to strip her of custody out of pure malice. If the media exposed her exact location, her ex-fiancé would track them down within days.
Terrified, crying silently in the front seat of her car, Maria packed Lily’s small overnight bag, wiped her tears, and walked up the grand staircase to Daniel’s private study to tender her immediate resignation.
When she placed the written letter on his desk, her hands were shaking so violently that she knocked over a silver pen holder. Daniel immediately stood up from his chair, coming around the desk to steady her. “Maria, what is this?” he asked, a heavy pit forming in his stomach as he saw the pure terror reflecting in her eyes.

“I... I can't work here anymore, Mr. Hale,” she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “It isn't safe for Lily. I have to take her and leave New York tonight.”
Daniel looked down at the fallen letter, picked up the manila envelope resting on the floor, pulled out the photographs, and felt a dangerous, terrifying fire ignite deep within his chest.
