Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The air in the high-rise conference room turned instantly to ice.
Harold Finch’s defense attorneys frantically grabbed their leather files, whispering among themselves as they read the emergency injunction served by the state marshals.
“This is an absurdity!” Margaret shouted, her composure finally shattering into raw, venomous rage as she pointed a finger at Marcus. “This marriage certificate is a forgery! Evelyn Sterling abandoned her husband six years ago! She was legally declared incapacitated!”
“By a Swiss clinic paid with funds laundered through Vance Minerals,” Marcus countered, pulling a second document from his briefcase. “Here is the official bank trail, signed off by the federal fraud task force thirty minutes ago. And here is the state secretary’s revocation order for Harold Finch’s notary commission, dated October 12, 2016.”
Marcus pointed directly at the golden seal gleaming on the altered prenup sitting on the table.
“You used a revoked notary seal to execute fraudulent transfers across three state lines,” Marcus said, turning to Harold Finch. “That is wire fraud, bank fraud, and forgery of official state instruments. The federal prosecutor’s office has already frozen every corporate and personal account registered to Bennett Holdings, Finch & Vance, and the Bennett family trust.”
“Daniel...” Margaret hissed, grabbing her son’s arm tightly. “Do something! Call the governor! Call the commissioner!”
Daniel looked at his mother, then at me, and finally at Evelyn. The illusion of his power, his family’s standing, and his aristocratic birthright had completely vanished, leaving behind only the hollow shell of a terrified coward.
“I... I didn't know about the notary seal, Mom,” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking. “You told me Harold handled everything legally! You said—”
“Shut your mouth, you foolish boy!” Margaret screamed, slapping her son across the face with a loud, stinging crack that resonated throughout the room.
The state marshals stepped forward, pulling pair after pair of steel handcuffs from their belts.
“Margaret Bennett, Daniel Bennett, and Harold Finch,” the lead marshal announced, reading from a white warrant card. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, criminal conspiracy, bigamy, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent.”
As the steel cuffs clicked around Daniel’s wrists, he turned to me, tears streaming down his face. “Clara... please... I loved you! I was just trying to save my family’s legacy!”

I looked at him, my heart entirely steady, free from even a single shred of grief or regret.
“You didn't love me, Daniel,” I said softly as the marshals escorted him toward the door. “You loved my father’s money. But you forgot one thing: my father taught me how to count.”
