Chapter 6 - The Ambush at Finch & Associates

At eight o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over the financial district, painting the glass skyscrapers in cold shades of blue and steel.
The flagship offices of Finch, Vance & Sterling occupied the entire top floor of the prestigious Sterling Tower downtown. In the main conference room, sunlight poured over a massive glass table where Harold Finch, Daniel Bennett, and Margaret Bennett sat surrounded by four corporate defense attorneys.
On the table sat the forged prenup, newly stamped and bound, ready to be hand-delivered to the county land registry office at nine o'clock sharp.
âIs everything in order, Harold?â Margaret asked, her voice sharp as she checked her diamond watch. âI want the land transfers registered the moment the clerkâs office opens. We have a margin call from the Zurich bank at ten.â
Harold Finch, an elderly man with slicked-back white hair and silver-rimmed spectacles, adjusted his silk tie. âEverything is seamless, Margaret. Claraâs signature is verified, my notary stamp is affixed, and Danielâs signature as the managing spouse is complete. Once filed, Vance Minerals is legally integrated into Bennett Holdings.â
Daniel sat silently, staring out the window at the city below, his hands clasped nervously in his lap. âWhat if she went to the press, Mom? What if she talked to Marcus Vance?â
âMarcus Vance is a disgraced ex-partner with no political standing,â Margaret sneered. âAnd Clara is a penniless orphan with no legal team. Who is going to listen to her?â
The heavy oak doors of the conference room burst open with a resounding boom.
Every head at the table snapped around.
I stepped into the room, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. Beside me walked Marcus Vance, carrying a thick leather litigation briefcase, followed closely by two uniformed state marshals and a court reporter holding a portable recording unit.
âI am,â I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls with absolute authority.
Daniel scrambled to his feet, his chair screeching against the polished floor. âClara! How did you get in here? Securityââ
âSecurity is currently downstairs answering questions from federal bank examiners, Mr. Bennett,â Marcus interrupted, stepping forward and laying a thick stack of legal notices flat on the center of the glass table.
Margaret didn't flinch. She slowly rose from her chair, her eyes burning with icy disdain. âMarcus. I see youâre still chasing ambulances. You have no standing in this office. Clara signed a legal prenuptial agreement yesterday, witnessed and notarized by Harold Finch. This matter is closed.â
âThe matter is just opening, Margaret,â I said, stepping right up to the table, looking Margaret directly in her cold, arrogant eyes. âBecause the woman standing behind me has a few things to say about Danielâs marital status.â
The conference room doors opened once more.
Evelyn Sterling walked into the room, her trench coat open, holding an official certified copy of her 2018 marriage certificate high in her hand.
Harold Finchâs face turned gray. The silver pen slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the glass table.
May you like
Daniel stumbled backward, his knees hitting his chair, his face completely drained of color. âEvelyn... no... youâre in Switzerland...â
âI came home for the wedding, Daniel,â Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper that chilled the entire room. âAnd I brought the state attorney general with me.â
