Chapter 9 - The Trial of Love

By dawn, the rain had stopped, giving way to a brilliant, crystal-clear morning over the mountains of Sewickley Heights.
Inside the underground panic suite of the estate, I sat on the plush sofa with Enzo asleep in my arms, while Lily lay her head in my lap, her small hand holding her stuffed rabbit.
The heavy steel door clicked open with a deep hydraulic hiss.
I stood up instantly.
Vincent walked in. He had removed his tactical gear, wearing a clean white shirt, though his hands were still slightly stained with gun oil and rain.
He looked tired, but the moment his gray eyes met mine, every trace of exhaustion vanished, replaced by profound, overwhelming love.
“Vincent!” I cried out, setting Enzo gently on the sofa and rushing across the room.
I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest, weeping with pure joy.
Vincent wrapped his powerful arms around me, lifting me off my feet, holding me close against his heart.
“Is it over?” I whispered through my tears.
“It’s over, my sweet,” Vincent murmured, kissing my eyes, my cheeks, my lips. “The ports are secure. The enemies are gone. Our home is safe.”
Lily scrambled off the sofa, running over and tugging on Vincent’s pant leg. “Daddy! Daddy!”
Vincent let out a soft, beautiful laugh. He lowered me back to my feet, reached down with one arm, and scooped Lily up into his chest, while I picked up Enzo.

We were a family.
