Chapter 10 - The Sound of the River

Two years after the incident at Bellamy House, a warm summer evening settled over the Chicago Riverwalk.

The water reflected the golden lights of the city’s skyscrapers as tourist boats drifted lazily past the bridges.

Callum and Marin walked hand in hand along the concrete path. Marin wore a simple summer dress, her long dark hair falling softly over her shoulders. Beside her, Callum walked at an easy, relaxed pace, looking completely happy.

They stopped at a quiet overlook near the historic LaSalle Street Bridge.

"My mother signed the lease for her second shop today," Marin said softly, leaning against the iron railing and looking out over the glowing water. "In Evanston. She’s hiring three young apprentices from the community center."

"She’s an extraordinary woman," Callum said, standing beside her. "Just like her daughter."

Marin turned to look at him, the warm city lights reflecting in her dark, expressive eyes.

"Do you ever think about that day at Bellamy House?" Marin asked softly.

Callum looked down at her, reaching out to gently take both of her hands in his.

"Every day," Callum said honestly. "Not because of the pain it caused... but because it was the exact moment my life actually began."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet ring box.

The world seemed to slow down around them. The sound of the river, the distant hum of city traffic, the cool evening breeze—everything fell into a soft, perfect harmony.

Callum dropped to one knee on the quiet stone path.

"Marin Vale," Callum said, his voice filled with a deep, unshakeable devotion. "You showed me what truth, grace, and real strength look like. You healed my life in ways I didn't know were possible. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy welled in Marin’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," Marin whispered, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Callum. Absolutely yes."

Callum stood up, slipped the delicate diamond ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms. He kissed her gently as the city lights twinkled across the dark, beautiful surface of the Chicago River.

The pain of the past had cleared away completely, leaving behind a life built on truth, dignity, and a love that could never be broken.
