Chapter 1 - The Footage in the Dark

The quiet tension inside Bellamy House felt as heavy as stone. Dorian Pike, his face drained of color, stood between Callum Ashford and Lenora while two junior waiters rushed over with wet towels and a bowl of cool water.
Callum didn't look at his wife. He knelt back down beside Marin, taking a soft, dampened cloth from the terrified waiter. His movements were steady, precise, and entirely devoid of hesitation.
"Hold this against your neck," Callum said softly to Marin. His voice carried a low, grounding authority that cut straight through her panic. "Do not rub. Just let the cool towel sit on the burn."
Marin took the towel with trembling fingers. The cool water hit her scorched skin, bringing a sharp sting followed by immediate relief. She looked at Callum’s hands—unblemished, expensive rings, perfect cuffs—now stained with wet brown coffee spots from his jacket wrapped around her shoulders.
"Mr. Ashford," Dorian began, his hands hovering nervously in the air. "We can take Miss Vale to the back office. The medical team is on their way—"
"Where are the camera monitors, Dorian?" Callum asked. He did not raise his voice, but the entire room went deadly silent.
Lenora took a sharp step forward, her white Chanel suit rustling. "Callum, this is absurd! You are making a scene in front of the board of the Women’s Heritage Foundation! This girl was rude, she knocked against my elbow, and the cup spilled. It was an accident!"
Callum stood up smoothly. He was six-foot-two, built like a man who spent his mornings in private gyms and his afternoons running an international logistics empire. He turned his head slowly toward his wife.
"An accident," Callum repeated. It wasn't a question.
"Yes!" Lenora snapped, her chin held high, relying on the quiet social contract that usually protected women of her standing. "She startled me. My hand slipped. Look at my sleeve—it's ruined!"
Callum didn't look at her sleeve. He looked directly at Dorian Pike. "The security office. Now."
Dorian swallowed hard, glancing toward Lenora’s father’s name on the restaurant’s VIP board. The Ashford family owned thirty percent of the building's holding company, but Callum’s private equity firm owned the controlling debt. Dorian knew instantly who held the real axe.
"Follow me, sir," Dorian whispered.
"I am not going anywhere to be interrogated like a criminal!" Lenora declared, her voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings. "Callum, you are embarrassing our family!"
"You can stay here," Callum said, his voice ice-cold. "Or you can walk with me. But the footage will be played."
He turned to Marin. "Can you walk?"
Marin swallowed the lump in her throat, her chest heaving as the pain in her neck throbbed. "I... I think so."

"Take my arm," Callum said, offering his elbow.
The twenty-three guests in the private dining room watched in absolute, stunned silence as billionaire Callum Ashford escorted a second-shift waitress out of the main hall, leaving his impeccably dressed wife standing alone beside a pile of shattered porcelain and spilled coffee.
