Chapter 9 - The Unspoken Bond

As the weeks turned into months, the rhythm of life at the Bellevue estate changed completely.

Ethan found himself spending less time at the high-rise office in downtown Seattle and more time working from his home study—the very room that had once been a crime scene, now transformed into a warm space filled with daylight, fresh flowers, and architectural plans for the foundation's shelters.

Every afternoon at four o'clock, the study door would open.

Lily would trot in, sit on the plush rug in the corner with her coloring books, while Sarah sat in the armchair opposite Ethan’s desk, reviewing foundation grants and staff hiring files.

One rainy Friday evening, after Lily had fallen asleep on the sofa in the reading nook, Ethan set his pen down and looked across the desk at Sarah.

The fire in the stone fireplace crackled gently, casting soft, golden light across her face. Her dark hair was pinned up loosely, a few stray strands framing her soft features.

"Sarah?" Ethan spoke softly.

Sarah looked up from her laptop, her hazel eyes meeting his. "Yes, Ethan?"

"Do you remember the night you asked me if you should leave the carriage house?" Ethan asked.

Sarah smiled faintly, setting her laptop aside. "I remember thinking my life was over."

"I was thinking about what Vanessa said that day," Ethan said, his voice quiet, reflective. "She asked why an employee’s child was wandering around my private life."

Sarah’s expression went slightly cautious. "Ethan... if Lily ever disturbs you—"

"No," Ethan interrupted, stepping around the desk and leaning against the edge near her chair. "That's not what I mean. Vanessa saw this house as an asset to be exploited. She saw people as stepping stones. But when I look at this house now... when I see you and Lily here... it’s the first time in my life this place actually feels like a home."

Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. The quiet, intense truth in his voice made her breath catch in her throat.

"Ethan..." she whispered.

"I spent years looking for a partner who fit into my world," Ethan continued, reaching out gently and taking her slender hand in his. Her skin was soft, warm, and real. "I looked in boardrooms, charity galas, and high-society clubs. But the most courageous, brilliant, and breathtaking woman I’ve ever met was right here, protecting her daughter and keeping my life together."

Sarah stared at their joined hands, her tears pricking her eyes—not tears of fear, but of an overwhelming, beautiful hope she hadn't allowed herself to feel since her husband died four years ago.

"Ethan... I'm just Sarah," she whispered softly. "I don't know how to navigate high society. I don't know how to host political dinners."

Ethan leaned down, bringing his face close to hers, his dark eyes filled with an undeniable, fierce devotion.

"I don't want high society, Sarah," Ethan whispered against her lips. "I want you."

He leaned in and kissed her softly.

Sarah let out a soft, trembling breath, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as the rain drummed against the study windows and the fire roared warmly in the hearth.
