Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Vanessa stood frozen in the middle of the dim salon. The elegant, polished socialite mask was shattered beyond repair, leaving behind a cold, cornered predator.
"You spied on me," Vanessa spat, her voice dropping into the harsh, guttural tone she had used on the phone recording. "In your own home. You're a sick, paranoid freak, Ethan!"
"I'm a businessman who protects his assets," Ethan replied without raising his voice. "Including my family, my company, and the people who work for me."
"This video is inadmissible!" Julian Pierce shouted, trying to step between Ethan and his daughter, though his voice was shaking with panic. "You recorded her without her consent in a private residence! Any court in Washington state will throw this out! You have nothing, Caldwell!"
"Actually, Julian," Noah Reed spoke up, stepping forward with a thick sheaf of legal documents, "Washington state privacy laws do not apply to commercial property zones. This estate is registered as the corporate headquarters for Caldwell-Reed Assets LLC. Ethan has a legal obligation to monitor all corporate premises for trade-secret protection."
Noah turned a page, staring down at Julian. "Furthermore, the SEC enforcement division just intercepted the offshore short-positions placed forty-five minutes ago by Pierce Capital Management—registered in the Cayman Islands under your name, Julian."
Julian’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the back of a sofa to keep from falling.
"You shorted three hundred million dollars of Zenith stock based on stolen trade secrets," Ethan said, looking between Julian and Vanessa. "That's corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and wire fraud. That's not a civil lawsuit, Julian. That's fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."
Vanessa turned on her father, her eyes wild with rage. "You idiot! I told you to route the short-trades through the Swiss entity!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Victoria Pierce screamed at her daughter, her aristocratic composure completely evaporating into a screaming, ugly breakdown. "You were supposed to get married first! You ruined everything!"
The thirty guests in the room—prominent Seattle philanthropists, corporate executives, and family friends—stared at the Pierce family with absolute horror and disgust.
"Get them out of my sight," Ethan commanded quietly.
The four private security guards stepped forward.
"Wait!" Vanessa shrieked as a guard took her arm. She turned to Ethan, her eyes filled with a terrifying mix of desperation and venom. "Ethan! Please! My family owes fifty million dollars to a private debt consortium in New York! They were going to take our estate! They were going to ruin us! I had no choice!"
Ethan looked at her—at the woman he had almost given his life, his name, and his trust to.

"You had a choice, Vanessa," Ethan said softly. "You could have asked for help. You could have been honest. But you chose to lie. You chose to use me. And you insulted a child who has more integrity in her pinky finger than your entire family has in their bloodline."
The guards escorted Vanessa, Julian, and Victoria Pierce out through the side doors, where two unmarked black SUVs were waiting to hand them over to federal marshals.
