Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Siege

While Sloan rested in the master suite under the care of a private nurse, Griffin’s war with his family reached its absolute climax.
At 10:00 AM on Monday morning, the glass doors of the Drake International boardroom on the 50th floor of the Columbia Center swung open. The twelve members of the Board of Trustees were already seated around the long mahogany table, talking in anxious, hushed tones.
At the head of the table sat Victoria Drake, looking pale but rigid, flanked by her nephew, Julian Drake.
"This emergency meeting is an outrage!" Julian declared, slamming his hand on the table as Griffin walked into the room, followed by his legal team and two uniformed federal officers. "Griffin has lost his mind! He’s trying to strip his own mother of her trustee position based on fabricated accusations from a former mistress!"
Griffin didn't say a word. He walked to the head of the table, standing opposite his mother and cousin. Marcus set a heavy leather briefcase on the table, opening it to reveal thick stacks of audited financial documents and a secure digital tablet.
"Members of the board," Griffin said, his voice dropping into a deadly, calm register that instantly silenced the room. "Ten years ago, Julian Drake and Victoria Drake embezzled four point two million dollars from the Drake Foundation to fund private intelligence operations against Sloan Callaway."
Julian’s face turned white as paper. "That's a lie!"
"I have the forensic accounting reports certified by Deloitte," Griffin continued smoothly, sliding a stack of folders down the table to the board members. "Furthermore, federal prosecutors have opened an indictment against Julian Drake for wire fraud, illegal wiretapping, and corporate extortion."
Griffin tapped the screen of the tablet. The speakers in the boardroom suddenly echoed with a crisp, clear audio recording from ten years ago—the unedited, raw tape of Julian and Victoria discussing how to splice Griffin’s voice to make it sound like he was calling Sloan a distraction.
"Sloan is a sweet distraction," Julian’s recorded voice mocked over the speakers.
"Edit the tape," Victoria’s cold voice replied. "Make sure she hears it before Tuesday. I want her off the continent before Griffin proposes."
The board members gasped. Several turned to glare at Victoria and Julian with utter disgust.
Victoria squeezed her eyes shut, lowering her head into her hands. Julian panicked, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the wall. "Griffin... listen to me! It was for the family! She was nobody! She would have ruined the Drake reputation!"
"You ruined yourself, Julian," Griffin said coldly.
Griffin nodded at the federal officers standing by the door. "Officers, Mr. Julian Drake is all yours."
The agents stepped forward, pulling Julian’s arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. Julian screamed obscenities as he was dragged out of the glass boardroom, his voice fading down the long hallway.
Griffin turned his icy gaze to his mother. "Victoria, you have two hours to resign from every board position, forfeit your trust shares back to the company, and move out of the Mercer Island estate. If you refuse, the Attorney General will press charges by noon."
Victoria stood up slowly, her hands trembling violently. She looked at her son—the boy she had tried to control for thirty-eight years—and realized that the empire she had built had turned into her own prison.
Without saying a word, she picked up her designer handbag and walked out of the boardroom, her heels clicking hollowly against the marble floor.

Griffin turned to the remaining board members, who were sitting in stunned silence.
"Meeting adjourned," Griffin said. "I have to take my daughters to the zoo."
