Chapter 10 - The Christmas Promise

Six months later, a heavy December snow was falling softly over the rolling hills of Bainbridge Island.
Nestled on a private five-acre waterfront lot stood a magnificent, newly constructed craftsman estate. The house was designed with soaring cedar beams, massive stone fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the snow-covered pine trees and the dark, calm waters of Puget Sound.
The house had been drawn, designed, and executed by Sloan Callaway herself—her first major architectural project as the newly appointed Chief Design Officer of Callaway-Drake Architectures, a new firm fully funded by Griffin.
Inside the grand living room, a massive fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood in the corner, sparkling with hundreds of warm golden lights and handmade ornaments.
In the backyard, visible through the glass doors, Hazel and Iris were running through the fresh snow in thick pink snowsuits, laughing hysterically as a golden retriever puppy chased them, biting at their boots.
Inside, the house smelled of fresh cinnamon rolls, roasting pine, and hot chocolate.
Sloan stood by the grand stone fireplace, wearing a soft cream knit sweater, sipping a warm cup of tea. Her skin was glowing, her dark hair fell in healthy, shining waves over her shoulders, and the tired, dark circles beneath her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, radiant happiness.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
Griffin pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the sweet scent of her hair.
"The girls are going to tire that puppy out before lunch," Griffin murmured, his low voice vibrating against her back.
Sloan smiled, resting her hands over his on her stomach. "You bought them a golden retriever, Griffin. You brought this on yourself."
"I promised Iris a dog," Griffin chuckled softly, kissing her temple. "I'm a man of my word."
He turned her around in his arms so she was facing him. The flickering firelight cast warm, golden shadows across his sharp jawline and those striking, steel-blue eyes that no longer held any of the coldness from six months ago.
Griffin reached into his pocket, pulling out a velvet ring box.
Sloan’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart began to race with the same electric excitement she had felt ten years ago in Paris.
Griffin opened the box. Inside sat a breathtaking, platinum ring featuring a rare, flawless six-carat emerald-cut diamond, flanked by two smaller, perfectly matched side stones—representing Hazel and Iris.
"Ten years ago, I bought a ring in Paris," Griffin said, his voice dropping into a deep, raw register filled with overwhelming love. "I lost it when you disappeared. But I never stopped loving you, Sloan. Not for a single day, not for a single second."
He gently took her right hand, his thumb stroking her knuckles.
"You gave me the greatest gift in the world when you brought Hazel and Iris into this life," Griffin whispered, tears glistening in his eyes. "Now, let me give you the rest of my life. Sloan Callaway, will you marry me?"
Sloan looked down at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had fought through ten years of lies, dismantled an empire, and opened his heart to give her and her daughters everything they could ever dream of.
"Yes," Sloan wept softly, a radiant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Griffin. A thousand times yes."
Griffin slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her with a deep, passionate intensity that erased every single memory of pain, coldness, and separation.
Outside, Hazel and Iris stopped playing in the snow, looking through the glass doors at their parents kissing by the fireplace.
"Look, Hazel," Iris pointed, a wide, gap-toothed grin on her face. "Daddy is kissing Mommy again."

Hazel smiled, her steel-blue eyes sparkling under the falling snowflakes as she grabbed her sister’s hand. "He's not going anywhere this time, Iris. He's staying forever."
And inside the warm, glowing house, surrounded by the falling snow and the promise of a lifetime together, Griffin Drake and Sloan Callaway held each other tight, finally home.
