Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Taps

The three short, three long, three short taps were not an SOS of desperation. In the covert operational language of Vanguard Security—the world’s most elite cyber-intelligence and financial defense firm—that sequence was known as Protocol Zero. It meant one thing: Full-scale scorched earth.
Eighteen months ago, the world believed Eleanor Whitaker was merely the socialite wife of Graham Vance, a rising venture capitalist. What Graham never knew, and what Victoria Ardell was about to learn, was that Eleanor had founded Vanguard Security under an alias long before she ever met Graham. The stroke had crippled her body, yes, but her mind remained an unyielding vault. The customized electric wheelchair she sat in was not a mobility aid provided by a hospital; it was a mobile command center equipped with satellite encryption, biometrics, and a silent neural-tactile interface.
Across town, inside a dark room filled with glowing blue monitors, Marcus—Eleanor’s former chief of operations—saw his primary screen flash crimson.
"Boss tapped," Marcus whispered, his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard. "Target locked: The Ardell Empire and Graham Vance. Authorization code: Eleanor-Alpha-One. Execute Protocol Zero."
Back in the glittering ballroom of the St. Aurelia Hotel, Victoria Ardell stood back, wiping her hands on a silk napkin as the scalding gravy dripped off Eleanor’s paralyzed lap onto the polished marble floor.
"Look at her," Victoria sneered, her voice echoing loudly over the stunned silence of three hundred millionaires. "She can't even cry. She’s nothing but a shell holding onto my son-in-law's past."
Graham stepped forward, offering a faint, mock-sympathetic frown for the crowd. "Eleanor... you should have stayed at the care facility. You’re making a scene."
Savannah, glowing in her multi-million-dollar silk gown, giggled softly into her crystal glass. "Mom, don't waste your energy on her. Let security roll her out to the alley."
Eleanor didn't flinch. The burning pain across her thighs was sharp, but the cold adrenaline flooding her veins was sharper. She looked up at Victoria, her one working eye glittering with lethal clarity. Her right hand, still resting on the armrest, felt the faint vibration of a confirmed connection.
Signal received.
Suddenly, the sweet sound of the string quartet sputtered and died as the ballroom lights flickered.
A heavy, reverberating buzz echoed through the sound system. High above the champagne tower, the three massive LED screens—originally displaying romantic engagement photos of Graham and Savannah—went black.
"What is happening?" Savannah demanded, her voice rising an octave. "Graham, fix it!"
Graham gestured frantically to the event coordinator. "Hey! Turn those screens off!"

Before the technicians could reach the control booth, the screens flashed back to life with a blinding white background. Then, a voice—cold, digitized, and booming—filled the entire ballroom through the high-end speakers.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of the Ardell-Vance wedding," the voice declared. "We now present the true cost of tonight’s union."
