Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Arthur took a frantic step backward, his back hitting the cold stone of the central fountain. He looked at me, his eyes wide with desperate, lying panic.

"Lorenzo! Listen to me!" Arthur pleaded, holding up his hands. "She's a liar! She’s an imposter sent by the Morettis to destroy our firm! I’ve protected your family for thirty years! I loved your father like a brother!"

"My father died holding a glass of poisoned wine that you poured for him, Arthur," I said, stepping forward until I was standing three feet from him.

I reached out, snatched the leather legal folder from beneath his arm, and opened it. Inside were the pre-signed liquidation orders for Duca Enterprises' European shipping terminals—documents that would have transferred hundreds of millions of dollars into shell accounts controlled by Arthur Sterling and Don Vincent Moretti.

"You didn't just betray my father, Arthur," I said softly, my voice vibrating with decades of suppressed rage. "You sold my entire family to the Morettis for twenty percent of a shipping network."

"I had no choice!" Arthur suddenly shrieked, breaking down under the weight of his own terror. "Silvio and Moretti... they were going to kill me too! They threatened my family! They offered me a way out!"

"And Dr. Vance?" Elena asked, tears of anger shining in her eyes as she stepped up beside me. "My father treated your children when they were sick! He called you his friend! Why did you tell the hit squad to burn our house down?!"

Arthur looked at Elena, his face twisting into a grotesque mask of pathetic greed. "Because your father kept journals, Elena! He wrote down every transaction! If he lived, he would have exposed the offshore accounts! I couldn't let him ruin everything!"

I pulled my Beretta from my holster and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Arthur Sterling’s forehead.

The old lawyer burst into violent sobs, sinking to his knees on the marble floor, grabbing at the hems of my trousers. "Please, Lorenzo! Please! I raised you after the massacre! I handled your trusts! I made you rich! Forgive me! In the name of your father, forgive me!"

"My father," I said, leaning down until my eyes were inches from his, "would have shot you himself."

I didn't pull the trigger.

Instead, I turned my head toward the side entrance of the hall. Two uniformed federal agents—accompanied by the Special Agent in Charge of the New York Organized Crime Task Force—stepped out into the light.

In Arthur’s frantic attempt to save his own life, he had just confessed to murder, treason, and corporate fraud in front of six federal wiretap microphones and four senior law enforcement officers I had quietly invited to the mansion two hours earlier.

"Arthur Sterling," the federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for first-degree murder, corporate conspiracy, and RICO violations."

As the federal agents slapped the cuffs onto Arthur’s wrists and dragged the weeping, broken old man out into the rain, Arthur looked back at me one last time.

"You're a monster, Lorenzo!" he screamed. "You're just like your father!"

"No, Arthur," I replied quietly, looking at Elena and little Sofia standing safely beside me. "My father was too trusting. I learned better."
