Chapter 3 - The Breach at Midnight

Kaiser’s head snapped toward the terrace doors, a low, ferocious rumble building deep within his chest.
"Marco!" I barked into my radio communicator, drawing my suppressed 9mm Beretta from my holster.
"Boss! We have a heavy breach at the north perimeter!" Marco’s voice cracked over the comms amid the deafening sound of gunfire and shattering glass. "Two armored vans just rammed the main gate! They aren't street thugs—they're high-end mercenaries wearing tactical gear! They’ve cut the main power lines!"
The lights inside the guest suite flickered twice and died, plunging the room into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Seconds later, the harsh red glow of the emergency backup generators clicked on, painting the walls in blood-red shadows.
Sofia woke up with a sharp, terrified scream, scrambling off the bed and burying her face in her mother’s waist. "Mommy! Mommy!"
"Shh, baby, I'm here," Elena whimpered, pulling the child behind her, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at me. "They found us... Renata signaled them!"
"Renata didn't signal them," I said coldly, walking to the terrace window and looking out across the estate grounds. Red tracer rounds were cutting through the foggy night air near the fountains. "Renata’s frame job failed this morning, so Arthur Sterling deployed his cleanup squad to erase every living soul in this house."
I turned back to Elena, kneeling down in front of little Sofia. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small, carved wooden horse—a lucky charm I had carried in my pocket for fifteen years, carved from the same orchard wood as the ones I had given Elena when we were children.
I pressed it into Sofia's tiny, trembling hand.
"Sofia," I said, my voice dropping into a calm, gentle frequency that made the child stop crying. "Look at me, little one."
The little girl looked into my eyes, her tear-filled dark eyes wide with trust.
"Nobody is going to hurt you or your mother tonight," I promised her. "Do you see this dog?"
Sofia nodded, her small fingers touching Kaiser’s heavy leather collar.
"His name is Kaiser. He is going to take you and your mommy to a secret room where no bad men can ever enter. Can you be brave and follow him?"
"Yes, sir," the child whispered bravely, clutching the wooden horse against her chest.
"Elena," I stood up, looking at her with absolute authority. "Take Sofia and follow Kaiser. He knows the way to the panic room behind the library wall. Do not open that door for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"

Elena grabbed my forearm, her fingers digging into my leather jacket. "Lorenzo... don't die. Don't let them win twice."
I looked down at her hand on my arm, feeling a surge of protective fury that I hadn't felt in fifteen long years. "They won fifteen years ago because I was a boy, Elena. Tonight, they are fighting the monster they created."
