Chapter 9 - A Second Chance

The courtroom held its breath as Judge Harrison read the final verdict.
"Taking into account your full cooperation with federal law enforcement, the complete dissolution of your criminal network, your lack of prior violent convictions, and the extraordinary character testimony provided today," the judge declared, striking her gavel, "I sentence you to five years of federal probation, ten thousand hours of mandatory community service at Pine Valley Children's Hospital, and a permanent, lifetime ban from engaging in any commercial shipping or financial enterprises."
Gasps filled the room, followed by a sudden burst of applause from the gallery.
Sebastian didn't go to prison. His decision to tear down his own empire, give away his wealth, and save the lives of an innocent mother and child had granted him the ultimate gift: a second chance.
When the courtroom cleared, Sebastian stood near the defense table, looking stunned. I walked up to him, a broad smile on my face, while Mia held Leo out to him.
Sebastian’s hands shook as he took the chubby, healthy six-month-old boy into his arms. Leo immediately reached out with his small hand and grabbed Sebastian’s index finger—the exact same way he had done on his very first night in the NICU.
"You came," Sebastian whispered, his eyes gleaming with unshed tears as he looked at me and Mia. "You all came for me."
"You never left Leo alone in that rocking chair, Sebastian," I said softly, touching his arm. "We weren't going to leave you alone in that courtroom."
"Thank you, Sarah," Sebastian said, his voice choked with emotion. "For everything. You saw the man I could be before I even believed it myself."
"So," Mia smiled warmly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Ten thousand hours of community service at the hospital? That means you're going to be around for a long, long time, Uncle Sebastian."

Sebastian looked down at Leo, who laughed happily, kicking his little legs against Sebastian's chest. For the first time in seventeen years, the ghost of Lucia wasn't a shadow of guilt hanging over his heart—it was a warm, shining light guiding him forward.
"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Sebastian said softly.
