Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Love

Five Years Later
The afternoon sun streamed through the wide glass windows of the brand-new Lucia Moretti Pediatric Pavilion at Pine Valley Children's Hospital.
The state-of-the-art facility had been built entirely through donations from Sebastian’s charitable foundation, providing free, world-class care to premature babies and low-income families across the state.
I stood in the central hallway, wearing my head nurse uniform, watching the bustling energy of doctors, nurses, and happy families. Beside me on the wall hung a large, elegant bronze plaque featuring the portrait of a tiny baby girl, with the inscription: “No child shall ever walk through the dark alone.”
"Nurse Sarah! Look what I built!"
A lively, five-year-old boy with bright brown eyes and a mop of dark curly hair came running down the corridor, holding up a colorful wooden toy ship. It was Leo. He was healthy, strong, and bursting with life.
"That's incredible, Leo!" I laughed, kneeling down to hug him. "Did you build that all by yourself?"
"Uncle Sebastian helped me with the sails!" Leo said proudly, pointing back toward the playroom.
Walking slowly down the hallway was Sebastian Moretti. At fifty-two, he looked younger and happier than he ever had during his years as a crime boss. He wore a simple beige cardigan and a warm, genuine smile that had completely replaced the cold, intimidating glare that used to strike fear into the hearts of men.
Behind him walked Mia, who was now serving as the executive director of the Lucia Moretti Foundation, managing housing and legal aid for young single mothers across the city.
"You're late for your shift, Volunteer Moretti," I teased, standing up and crossing my arms.
"Forgive me, Head Nurse Sarah," Sebastian chuckled, adjusting his sleeve—where his old, faded hospital bracelet had been replaced by a custom leather band engraved with two names: Lucia & Leo. "We had a very serious naval engineering crisis in the playroom."
Mia smiled, kissing Sebastian on the cheek before taking Leo’s hand. "We're going to head to the park, Uncle Sebastian. Will you join us for dinner later?"
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Mia," Sebastian replied warmly. "Tell the restaurant I’m paying."
"You always pay!" Mia laughed, leading a giggling Leo down the hallway toward the main exit.
Sebastian stood beside me, watching them leave until they disappeared through the glass doors into the bright sunlight outside.
He turned his gaze toward the NICU pod across the hall. Through the window, a newly admitted premature baby lay inside an incubator, crying softly as a young nurse tried to comfort him.
Sebastian rolled up his sleeves, washed his hands meticulously at the sanitation station, and pulled on a clean medical gown.
"Room four?" Sebastian asked me, his voice rich with quiet purpose.
"Room four," I agreed softly, handing him a warm blanket. "He’s three pounds, eight ounces. He needs a person."
Sebastian took the blanket, stepped into the quiet room, and sat down in the wooden rocking chair. He gently lifted the tiny, fragile infant against his broad chest, supporting its head with his scarred, strong hands.

As Sebastian began to rock gently, whispering his familiar, soft Italian lullaby, the baby’s frantic crying slowly subsided into a calm, steady rhythm.
The dark past was gone, washed away by tears, redemption, and love. The most feared man in the city had finally found his true calling—not as a ruler of shadows, but as a guardian of light.
