Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Shadows

The criminal trial of State v. Julian Vance and Clara Miller lasted six grueling days.

The courtroom was filled with evidence bags: the poisoned chicken dish preserved in biohazard canisters, the glass of apple juice, the burner phones, and the toxicological reports.

Clara took the stand on day four, having completely collapsed under the pressure. She wept openly, pointing a shaking finger at Julian. "He told me he loved me!" she sobbed into the microphone. "He said Claire was miserable, that she was going to divorce him and take everything! He promised me we would start over in Spain!"

Julian sat at the defense table in his orange prison jumpsuit, staring at her with cold, dead eyes.

On day five, I took the stand.

I looked directly into the jury box—twelve men and women who listened intently to every word I spoke. I described the taste of the heavy, thick poison on my tongue. I described the terrifying sensation of my body failing me, the cold carpet against my cheek, and the sound of my husband whispered "Good" as he nudged my unconscious body with his shoe.

And then, I told them about Evan’s hand.

"He was ten years old," I said, my voice strong, clear, and ringing with absolute truth. "He lay on that floor, paralyzed, listening to his father plan his death. And when he squeezed my hand in the dark, I knew I would burn the world down to protect him."

By the time I stepped down from the witness stand, three jurors were wiping tears from their eyes.

On the sixth day, after only two hours of deliberation, the jury returned.

"Will the defendants please rise," the judge commanded.

Julian and Clara stood up. Clara was shaking uncontrollably, while Julian maintained a rigid, arrogant posture, still believing his charm might save him.

"On Count One, Attempted First-Degree Murder of Claire Vance, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the jury foreman announced firmly.

"On Count Two, Attempted First-Degree Murder of Evan Vance, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

A loud gasp echoed through the gallery. Clara slumped into her seat, bursting into hysterical wails as female bailiffs immediately took her into custody.

The judge lowered his gaze upon Julian. "Julian Vance, for your heinous, cold-blooded, and calculated actions against your own flesh and blood, I sentence you to two consecutive life terms in maximum-security prison, without the possibility of parole."

Julian's arrogant mask finally shattered. As the guards grabbed his arms to lead him away, he looked toward me, his face twisted in panic.

"Claire!" he screamed as he was dragged through the side door. "Claire, please! Forgive me! Claire!"

I didn't answer. I didn't even blink. I watched the heavy steel door slam shut behind him, locking him away in the dark forever.
