Chapter 6 - The Web Unravels

Within twenty-four hours of Julian and Clara’s arrests, the narrative in the media flipped entirely. The tragic story of a missing mother and son was replaced by front-page headlines detailing a horrific, greedy plot engineered by a husband and his wife's own sister.
Inside the safety of Marcus’s estate, Evan was finally starting to sleep through the night without waking up screaming. The physical effects of the poison had cleared, but the emotional scars were deep.
"Is Dad ever coming back?" Evan asked softly one morning over breakfast, staring down at his cereal bowl.
I sat beside him, pulling him into my arms and kissing the top of his head. "No, baby. He’s going to a place where he can never, ever hurt us again."
"Why did he do it, Mom?" Evan’s voice was small, cracked with the pain no ten-year-old should ever have to bear. "Did he not love us?"
"Some people are sick, Evan," I explained gently, wiping a stray tear from his cheek. "They let greed turn their hearts into stone. But you and I? We have each other, and we are going to build a life so safe and happy that no one can ever take it from us."
While Evan was resting, Marcus called me into his home office. The desk was covered in thick financial ledgers and court summonses.
"Julian’s defense team is already scrambling," Marcus told me, opening a red folder. "His court-appointed lawyer tried to file a motion for bail this morning, but the judge denied it without prejudice. He’s being held without bond until trial."
"What about Clara?"
"Clara’s attorney is pushing for a plea deal," Marcus replied. "She offered to testify against Julian in exchange for thirty years instead of life without parole. But the prosecutor isn't buying it. They have enough hard physical evidence to put both of them away for the rest of their natural lives."
Marcus slid another document toward me. "However, there’s a complication."
I frowned. "What kind of complication?"
"Julian’s mother, Evelyn," Marcus sighed. "She just filed an emergency motion with the family court seeking temporary custody of Evan. She’s claiming you are emotionally unfit to raise him due to the 'trauma of the event,' and she’s hired one of the highest-paid custody attorneys in the state."
A fresh flame of anger ignited in my chest. Evelyn Vance—a bitter, controlling woman who had always looked down on me and treated Julian like a prince who could do no wrong.
"She thinks she can take my son?" I snarled, my knuckles turning white.

"She’s trying to protect Julian's remaining legal assets," Marcus explained cleanly. "If she gets legal guardianship of Evan, she gains control over the family trust fund that your late father setup for Evan’s college—a trust worth over one million dollars. She’s trying to drain it to pay for Julian's criminal defense lawyers."
I stood up, my eyes flashing with absolute determination. "She won't get a single penny. And she will never lay a hand on my son."
