Chapter 9– The Woman Who Stole Five Years

The gates of Blackwater Estate opened without a sound.

One after another, the armored SUVs disappeared behind towering stone walls crowned with iron fencing and discreet security cameras. The estate overlooked the Atlantic Ocean, hidden behind dense pine forests and accessible only by a winding private road.

Lucia stared through the tinted window.

"So this is how a king hides."

Tomaso glanced at her.

"No."

"What then?"

"This is how a man protects the people he can't afford to lose."

Neither of them said another word.

In the back seat, Marco had fallen asleep against Lucia's shoulder, clutching his worn teddy bear. Matteo remained awake, watching everything with quiet curiosity.

"How many people live here?" he asked.

"About thirty," Tomaso answered.

Matteo's eyebrows shot upward.

"Thirty?"

"They work here."

"They all work for you?"

"Yes."

The little boy thought for a moment.

"That's a lot of birthdays to remember."

Despite everything, Tomaso smiled.

"I suppose it is."

The front doors opened before they reached the entrance.

Rows of staff stood waiting.

Housekeepers.

Security officers.

Chefs.

Doctors.

Every face reflected the same emotion.

Shock.

None of them had ever seen Tomaso bring anyone home.

Much less a woman.

Much less two children who looked exactly like him.

An elderly woman stepped forward from the crowd.

Silver-haired, elegant, and carrying herself with quiet confidence.

"Welcome home, Tomaso."

Then she looked at Lucia.

"And welcome to you."

"I'm Elena," she said warmly. "I've looked after this impossible man since he was twelve."

Lucia offered a polite nod.

"It's nice to meet you."

Elena's eyes drifted to the twins.

"So these must be the little miracles."

Marco waved enthusiastically.

"I'm Marco!"

"And I'm Matteo."

Elena crouched until she was at eye level.

"I've been waiting a very long time to meet you."

Lucia looked sharply at Tomaso.

"You told them?"

He shook his head.

"I didn't have to."

Elena smiled sadly.

"He searched for you every week for five years."

Lucia said nothing.

She wasn't ready to hear that story.

Not yet.

The boys forgot their fear almost immediately.

The enormous library fascinated Matteo.

Marco became obsessed with the indoor swimming pool.

Within an hour they had discovered hidden hallways, a music room, and an entire garden filled with roses.

"They're children again," Elena whispered as she watched them run across the lawn.

Lucia followed them with her eyes.

"They've always been children."

"No."

Elena smiled gently.

"They've been survivors."

The words lingered long after Elena walked away.

Meanwhile...

Tomaso descended beneath the estate.

Two levels underground.

Past reinforced steel doors.

Into the command center of the Sylvestri organization.

The room fell silent the moment he entered.

Maps covered one wall.

Security feeds filled another.

His most trusted advisers waited around a long oak table.

Lorenzo.

Vittorio.

Marco's godfather, Enzo.

And finally...

Damiano Ricci.

The man responsible for internal security.

Tomaso didn't sit.

"Someone betrayed my family."

No one answered.

"They knew Lucia's location."

Silence.

"They knew about my sons."

Still nothing.

His voice became dangerously calm.

"I'll ask once."

He looked each man in the eyes.

"Who sold them?"

Damiano folded his hands.

"We're investigating."

"I didn't ask what you're doing."

Another silence.

"I asked who."

No one spoke.

Tomaso reached into his jacket.

He placed a single bullet on the table.

It rolled slowly until it stopped in the center.

"Every hour the traitor remains alive..."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"...my children remain targets."

Upstairs, Lucia unpacked the boys' backpacks.

She arranged their pajamas inside the bedroom Elena had prepared.

The room was beautiful.

Blue walls.

Bookshelves.

A telescope by the window.

Two small beds shaped like sailboats.

It looked like a dream.

Which frightened her even more.

Nothing this perfect lasted forever.

A gentle knock interrupted her thoughts.

She turned.

Tomaso stood outside.

"I'm not here to argue."

She folded her arms.

"Then why are you here?"

He held out a small envelope.

"I think this belongs to you."

Confused, Lucia opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Airport security images.

Train stations.

Street cameras.

Every photograph showed her.

Sometimes carrying groceries.

Sometimes pushing a stroller.

Sometimes walking alone.

Her hands began shaking.

"You..."

"I never found you."

His voice cracked.

"I only found traces."

She continued turning the photographs.

Every few months.

Every year.

Each ending in failure.

On the last page was a faded picture of a hospital.

Dated five years earlier.

"I found the hospital where the twins were born."

Lucia froze.

"But..."

"I arrived three days after you left."

He closed his eyes.

"They told me a young woman with newborn twins had boarded a bus before sunrise."

She whispered,

"You were that close?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you stop looking?"

He laughed bitterly.

"Because I loved you."

The words filled the room with unbearable silence.

Finally Lucia looked at him.

"If you loved me..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"...why were you with Sofia?"

The question he had dreaded for five years.

Tomaso didn't answer immediately.

Instead he reached into his wallet.

From a hidden compartment he removed a tiny silver flash drive.

"I've carried this every day."

"What is it?"

"The truth."

An hour later...

Lucia sat alone in Tomaso's private study.

A laptop rested on the desk.

The flash drive loaded a security recording.

Date:

Five years ago.

The night before their wedding.

The image showed Tomaso entering his bedroom.

He looked exhausted.

A man handed him a glass of whiskey before leaving.

Twenty minutes later...

Tomaso stumbled.

His movements became unsteady.

His eyes unfocused.

Another person entered the room.

Lucia leaned closer.

Sofia.

Her younger sister.

Lucia stopped breathing.

On the recording, Sofia guided the barely conscious Tomaso toward the bed.

He tried to stand.

Failed.

Collapsed.

Then...

Sofia began unbuttoning her own dress.

Lucia covered her mouth.

"No..."

The bedroom door opened.

Exactly three inches.

Just as she remembered.

The recording ended.

Lucia stared at the black screen.

Her entire world tilted beneath her feet.

"He..."

She couldn't finish.

"I was drugged," Tomaso said quietly from the doorway.

"I never touched her willingly."

Lucia stood abruptly.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

"You never came after me that night!"

"I woke up in the hospital."

She looked at him in disbelief.

"What?"

"The sedative nearly stopped my heart."

He handed her medical records.

Hospital admission.

Toxicology report.

Police statements that had gone nowhere.

"I escaped two days later."

His voice was hollow.

"By then..."

"You were gone."

He nodded.

"I searched from that day forward."

Lucia sank into the chair.

Everything she had believed for five years...

Everything she had built her life around...

Suddenly stood on uncertain ground.

One question remained.

"Why?"

Tomaso answered immediately.

"Someone needed us apart."

Elsewhere...

In a luxury villa overlooking the Mediterranean, Sofia poured herself a glass of wine.

The television displayed a news report about increased security around Blackwater Estate.

She smiled.

"So..."

She whispered.

"They finally found each other."

A man stepped from the shadows.

"You don't seem worried."

"Oh, I am."

She took a slow sip.

"But not for myself."

"What do you mean?"

Sofia's smile widened.

"They still think I acted alone."

The man frowned.

"You didn't?"

She laughed softly.

"The night Lucia walked away..."

Her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.

"...I was following someone else's orders."

The man stiffened.

"Does Tomaso know?"

"No."

"Does Lucia?"

"Not yet."

She set the glass down.

"But they will."

Her smile vanished.

"And when they discover who truly destroyed their lives..."

She looked toward the sea.

"...every family in Italy will go to war."

Far away, inside Blackwater Estate, Lucia stared once more at the frozen image of her sister leading an unconscious Tomaso toward the bed.

For the first time in five years, she questioned the memory that had defined her entire life.

If Tomaso had been innocent...

May you like

Then someone else had stolen five years from them.

And that someone was still out there.
