Chapter 10 – The War for the Heirs

For the first time in five years, Lucia couldn't sleep.

The security footage played over and over in her mind.

Sofia leading Tomaso toward the bed.

The vacant look in his eyes.

The toxicology report.

The hospital records.

Every piece fit together with terrifying precision.

She had spent half a decade hating a man who might never have betrayed her at all.

But forgiveness did not come as quickly as the truth.

Five years of loneliness.

Five years of raising twins by herself.

Five years of birthdays he had missed.

No recording could erase those years.

A soft knock came at the bedroom door.

"Mama?"

Marco stood in the hallway, rubbing his sleepy eyes while holding his battered teddy bear.

"I had a bad dream."

Lucia opened her arms immediately.

"Come here."

He climbed onto the bed beside her.

"The bad men found us again."

"It was only a dream."

"They were chasing Mister Daddy."

Lucia smiled faintly.

"You've decided to keep calling him that?"

Marco nodded seriously.

"I think he's still learning how to be a daddy."

She kissed the top of his head.

"So are we."

Within minutes he was asleep again.

Lucia lay awake beside him, staring at the ceiling.

Downstairs, Tomaso wasn't sleeping either.

The underground command center buzzed with activity.

Satellite images covered the central display.

Encrypted messages flashed across multiple monitors.

Damiano entered carrying a thick folder.

"We've identified the men who attacked the apartment."

Tomaso looked up.

"Moretti?"

Damiano nodded.

"But they weren't acting alone."

He placed several photographs on the table.

One face caught Tomaso's attention immediately.

"No..."

"It surprised us too."

The photograph showed Carlo Ventresca.

One of Tomaso's oldest captains.

A man who had served the Sylvestri family for nearly twenty years.

"He disappeared three days ago."

Tomaso's jaw tightened.

"Find him."

"We're trying."

"No."

Tomaso's voice became cold enough to silence the room.

"You're misunderstanding me."

He looked directly at Damiano.

"I didn't ask you to try."

Morning arrived with an illusion of peace.

Sunlight spilled across the gardens.

Marco chased butterflies between the rose bushes.

Matteo sat beneath an ancient oak tree reading a book nearly as large as he was.

Tomaso watched from the terrace.

"They're beautiful."

Elena smiled beside him.

"They're also very much like you."

"I hope not."

She looked at him with amusement.

"Really?"

"I don't want them growing up in my world."

"They already have."

His smile faded.

Elena rested a gentle hand on his arm.

"The difference is that now they have a father willing to stand between them and that world."

Before Tomaso could answer, laughter echoed across the lawn.

Marco had convinced Matteo to race toward the fountain.

The twins sprinted through the grass, their identical smiles bright enough to erase years of darkness.

Lucia stepped onto the terrace carrying two cups of coffee.

She hesitated before handing one to Tomaso.

"Thank you."

The simple words felt strangely unfamiliar between them.

Neither mentioned the previous night's revelations.

Neither knew where to begin.

Instead, they stood in silence watching their sons.

After several minutes Lucia finally spoke.

"They laugh like nothing happened."

"Children are stronger than adults."

"They shouldn't have to be."

"No."

"They deserve ordinary lives."

"They will have them."

Lucia turned toward him.

"Can you promise that?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because for the first time in years...

He couldn't.

Hundreds of miles away...

Inside an abandoned monastery hidden among the mountains of northern Italy...

The Moretti family gathered around a long stone table.

Their leader, Vittorio Moretti, studied photographs of the twins.

Five years old.

Dark-haired.

Healthy.

Alive.

"So."

He looked around the room.

"The rumors were true."

One of his advisers nodded.

"The Sylvestri bloodline continues."

"And the mother?"

"Recovered."

"The father?"

"Protecting them personally."

Vittorio smiled.

"Excellent."

His advisers exchanged confused glances.

"Our first attempt failed."

"It wasn't supposed to succeed."

The room fell silent.

"It was a test."

"A test?"

"Yes."

Vittorio tapped one photograph.

"I wanted to see exactly how far Tomaso would go to protect them."

"And?"

His smile widened.

"He'd burn the world."

The old mafia boss stood and walked toward the window.

"That makes the children his greatest strength."

He paused.

"And his greatest weakness."

That afternoon...

Lucia helped the twins unpack the last of their belongings.

Matteo carefully arranged his books.

Marco lined up his stuffed animals on the bed.

"There."

Marco nodded proudly.

"Now it feels like home."

The word caught Lucia by surprise.

Home.

Could this ever become one?

Before she could answer herself, alarms exploded throughout the estate.

A sharp electronic warning echoed across every hallway.

Red emergency lights began flashing.

The twins jumped.

"What was that?"

Lucia's pulse quickened.

Not again.

Tomaso burst through the bedroom door.

"Stay with Elena."

"What happened?"

"We have an intruder."

One of the security officers appeared moments later.

His face had turned pale.

"Boss..."

"What?"

The man struggled to speak.

"The east perimeter wasn't breached."

"Then why the alarm?"

He swallowed hard.

"Because someone was already inside."

The estate immediately went into lockdown.

Steel shutters covered every ground-floor window.

Security teams flooded the corridors.

Electronic locks sealed every entrance.

Lucia gathered both boys close.

Marco whispered,

"Is this another game?"

She forced a smile.

"Something like that."

Matteo looked toward Tomaso.

"You look scared."

Tomaso crouched beside him.

"I am."

"Because of us?"

"Because I never want anything to happen to you."

Matteo thought carefully.

"That's what Mama says too."

Before Tomaso could reply, a gunshot echoed from downstairs.

Then another.

Radio chatter erupted.

"North corridor!"

"Officer down!"

"Protect the children!"

Tomaso drew his pistol.

Lucia instinctively stepped in front of the twins.

"No."

He looked at her.

"They need you alive."

"So do you."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Both of them froze.

Lucia quickly looked away.

"I meant..."

"I know what you meant."

Did she?

She wasn't certain anymore.

Deep inside the estate...

A lone figure moved through hidden service tunnels built generations earlier.

He knew every blind spot.

Every camera angle.

Every emergency exit.

Because he had designed half of them himself.

Carlo Ventresca smiled.

Everything had gone exactly as planned.

While security rushed toward the front of the mansion...

No one noticed him climbing the staircase leading directly to the children's wing.

He opened a concealed panel.

Listened.

Silence.

Perfect.

He stepped into the hallway.

Only twenty meters separated him from the twins' bedroom.

Upstairs...

Elena suddenly stopped walking.

"What is it?" Lucia asked.

The older woman's expression changed.

"I've lived here forty years."

She slowly turned toward the corridor behind them.

"Those footsteps..."

Another step echoed.

Soft.

Measured.

Confident.

Elena whispered,

"That isn't one of ours."

Carlo rounded the corner.

For one heartbeat, everyone stared at each other.

Then he smiled.

"Good afternoon."

Lucia recognized the predator in his eyes immediately.

She pushed the twins behind her.

Carlo calmly raised a silenced pistol.

"I only need the boys."

"No."

"It'll be easier if they come quietly."

Marco began crying.

Matteo grabbed his brother's hand.

Lucia refused to move.

"If you want my sons..."

Her voice trembled with fury rather than fear.

"...you'll have to kill me first."

Carlo sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't say that."

He squeezed the trigger.

A deafening blast echoed through the hallway.

But Lucia never felt the bullet.

Instead...

Someone threw himself between her and the shot.

Tomaso.

The impact spun him sideways.

Blood spread rapidly across his shoulder.

Lucia screamed.

"Tomaso!"

He ignored the pain.

With his uninjured arm, he tackled Carlo into the opposite wall.

The pistol slid across the marble floor.

Marco buried his face against Lucia.

Matteo stared in horror.

"Daddy..."

The word escaped without thought.

Tomaso heard it.

Even as he fought.

Even as another punch struck his face.

He heard it.

And somehow...

It gave him the strength to keep fighting.

Carlo reached for a hidden knife.

Before he could strike—

A single shot rang out.

Carlo froze.

His eyes widened.

Then he collapsed.

Behind him stood Damiano.

Smoke still curled from the barrel of his pistol.

The hallway fell silent.

Lucia rushed to Tomaso.

His shirt was soaked with blood.

"Stay with me."

He looked at her.

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

She pressed both hands against the wound.

He smiled weakly.

"I told you..."

"What?"

"...I'd protect them."

Tears streamed down Lucia's face.

"So stop trying to be the hero."

"I can't."

"Why?"

He looked toward the twins.

"Because they're my sons."

Marco ran into his father's arms despite the blood.

Matteo followed a second later.

The four of them remained locked together in the middle of the shattered hallway.

For the first time since they had reunited...

They looked like a family.

Watching from the end of the corridor, Damiano quietly lowered his weapon.

No one noticed the brief flicker of satisfaction that crossed his face.

No one noticed him slipping Carlo's phone into his own pocket before anyone else could see it.

Because the man everyone believed had just saved the Sylvestri family...

Was hiding a secret of his own.

And somewhere, far away, Vittorio Moretti received a single encrypted message.

Phase One Complete.

He smiled.

May you like

"The real war," he whispered,

"begins now."
