Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Library

The confrontation with Eleanor proved to be a catalyst, though not the one the older woman had intended.
Instead of isolating Julian, it ripped away the final remnants of the emotional armor he had worn since Margaux’s death. Over the next two weeks, the invisible wall between the master of the mansion and his housekeeper dissolved entirely.
Julian began spending his mornings eating breakfast with Carmen, Ana, and the twins before heading to his home office. He started joining them for afternoon walks by the lake at the edge of the property. He even learned how to make Mexican hot chocolate using Carmen’s secret recipe, standing proudly over the stove while Milo and Elle clapped their hands in delight.
One evening, after the children were fast asleep, Julian sat at his massive mahogany desk in the private library, staring at a stack of acquisition reports. But the numbers wouldn't stick. His mind kept drifting down the hall to the small, sunlit kitchen where Carmen was likely cleaning up.
A sharp knock broke his concentration.
The door pushed open, and Winifred stepped inside holding a thick manila folder. Her expression was uncharacteristically hesitant.
"Mr. Everhart," Winifred said quietly, closing the library door behind her. "I apologize for disturbing you at this hour, but there is something you need to see. It came via courier from Boston this afternoon, addressed to the estate manager for internal review."
Julian frowned, leaning back in his leather chair. "What is it, Winifred?"
"It’s a background compliance check," Winifred said, sliding the folder across the mahogany desk. "Standard procedure for senior staff renewal after thirty days. I ran Carmen’s documentation through our corporate security clearance protocol... and something came up that I believe you should review personally, rather than delegating to HR."
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. A cold, sudden spike of anxiety shot through his chest. No. Not Carmen. Not the one person who had brought light back into his home.
"Open it," Julian ordered, his voice tight.
Winifred opened the folder, revealing a series of printed documents, employment records, and a legal transcript from a small municipal court in Boston dating back four years.
Julian scanned the pages rapidly. His eyes locked onto a section detailing Carmen’s history before she came to Connecticut—her previous employment as a domestic worker for a wealthy political family in Boston, and the sudden, dramatic termination of her contract.
"Read the depositions, Mr. Everhart," Winifred urged softly.
Julian flipped the page. There was a statement from a wealthy Boston socialite accusing Carmen of gross misconduct, breach of confidentiality, and—most shockingly—attempted financial extortion regarding family assets.
Julian stared at the words, the room suddenly feeling like it was spinning on its axis.
Extortion.
The word echoed in his head like a gunshot.
"She was accused of stealing a diamond heirloom brooch from the master suite during her employment," Winifred explained, her voice heavy with regret. "The charges were eventually dropped because the family settled out of court to avoid a public scandal, but... Mr. Everhart, she signed an NDA and received an undisclosed severance package before fleeing Boston overnight."
Julian sat in total silence, the papers burning his fingers.
Everything inside him screamed that it was a lie—that the warm, compassionate woman who had wiped his son's tears and taught his daughter how to laugh could never be a thief or an extortionist. But he was a billionaire businessman who had built his empire on data, risk assessment, and cold, hard facts.
And the facts were sitting in black and white right in front of him.
"Where is she right now?" Julian asked, his voice chillingly calm.
May you like
"She’s in the nursery wing, Mr. Everhart," Winifred replied quietly. "Putting away the children's laundry."
Julian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the bookshelf. Without a word, he strode out of the library and headed down the corridor toward the staff quarters, his chest burning with a terrifying mix of betrayal, anger, and heartbreak.
