Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The defamation lawsuit was swift, brutal, and historic.

Within forty-eight hours of publication, Jacobs Global Finance’s legal team descended upon the Boston Globe and the tabloid syndicates with the full, unyielding force of a billion-dollar war chest. Ethan Parker was cornered by federal investigators, his debt records subpoenaed, and his campaign of extortion exposed in a public retraction that ran on the front page of every major newspaper in the country.

The fallout was catastrophic for the perpetrators, and absolute vindication for Abigail Hill.

Two weeks later, the sun broke over Newport Harbor in a brilliant display of gold and amber, warming the stony facade of Breakers Mansion without a single cloud in sight.

Inside the grand dining room, the table was set for breakfast. But today, there was an extra setting.

Ben and Jerry bounced into the room, wearing matching button-down shirts, laughing as they raced to their seats.

“Miss Hill! Dad! Look outside! The gardeners fixed the conservatory window!” Ben shouted excitedly, pointing toward the rose garden where a magnificent, flawless replica of the 17th-century stained glass shimmered in the morning light.

Abigail walked into the dining room, dressed in a soft, elegant emerald dress that accentuated the natural warmth in her eyes. She smiled, looking toward the head of the table.

Pedro Jacobs was already seated. But he wasn't looking at a tablet, and he wasn't on a conference call.

He was smiling—a real, full, uninhibited smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes.

As Abigail reached her seat, Pedro stood up, walked around the mahogany table, and pulled out her chair for her with old-fashioned, deliberate grace.

“Good morning, Abigail,” Pedro said softly, his voice rich with quiet adoration.

“Good morning, Pedro,” she replied, her heart swelling with a happiness she had never dared to dream of.

Ben and Jerry exchanged a conspiratorial grin across the table, high-fiving under the edge of the tablecloth. Their family wasn't broken anymore. The walls of Breakers Mansion were no longer a fortress keeping the world out; they were a home keeping love in.

And as Pedro sat down beside Abigail, holding her hand under the table while the morning sun flooded the room with warmth, he knew with absolute certainty that no empire he ever built would ever compare to the life they had just begun together.
