Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

Weeks turned into a crisp, blooming spring, and the Moretti estate underwent a silent, miraculous transformation.
The heavy iron gates still guarded the perimeter, and armed men still patrolled the manicured gardens, but inside the stone walls, laughter could occasionally be heard echoing down the grand hallways. Emma had become the unofficial princess of the manor. The tough-as-nails enforcers who once terrified Sophia now melted whenever the three-year-old toddled past demanding they play tea party with plastic cups.
And Bruno? The vicious war dog had become Emma’s shadow, trailing her every step from the sunlit courtyard to the sprawling library.
For Sophia, life had settled into a surreal rhythm. She no longer worked as a standard maid scrubbing floors; Alessandro had quietly promoted her to estate manager, giving her oversight of the household staff and a generous salary that allowed her to buy Emma all the clothes, books, and toys she could ever dream of.
Yet, safety in their world was always fragile.
It happened on a warm Tuesday afternoon in April. Sophia was reviewing supply invoices in her new office on the second floor when a sharp knock sounded at the door.
Mateo stepped inside, his face tight with a grim expression that Sophia hadn't seen since the night of the warehouse siege.
“Sophia,” Mateo said, closing the door firmly behind him. “We have a complication. The local police department... or rather, detectives on the payroll of a rival syndicate from Detroit... have flagged a missing person report out of Akron, Ohio.”
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The ink pen slipped from her fingers, clattering against the polished oak desk.
“Thomas,” she whispered, the name feeling like poison on her tongue.
“Your ex-husband,” Mateo confirmed grimly. “He managed to bribe a corrupt detective in Ohio to run your social security number. He knows you’re in Chicago. And worse... he’s crossed state lines. He’s checked into a motel on the south side, asking questions about the Moretti estate and a young mother with a child.”
Terror, cold and paralyzing, flooded Sophia’s veins. Thomas was a violent, vengeful man who viewed her and Emma not as human beings, but as property. If he found them, he wouldn't just drag them back to Ohio—he would destroy them.
“Does... does Mr. Moretti know?” Sophia asked, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
“The Boss knew before I finished reading the report,” Mateo replied softly. “He’s currently down in the courtyard with Bruno. He asked for you.”
Without another word, Sophia bolted from the room, her heart pounding in her ears as she rushed down the grand staircase and out into the spring sunlight.
Alessandro was standing by the stone fountain, his dark overcoat draped over his arm in the warm afternoon air. Bruno was sitting alert at his heel. When Alessandro saw Sophia running toward him, his expression hardened into stone.
“Mateo told you,” Alessandro stated flatly as she reached him, breathless and shaking.
“He’s here, isn't he?” Sophia cried, tears spilling over her lashes. “Thomas found us. Alessandro, please—he’s dangerous. He has nothing to lose. If he comes here, if he hurts Emma—”
“He won't,” Alessandro interrupted. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an absolute, crushing weight of finality that made the surrounding air feel heavy.
“You don't know him!” Sophia sobbed, grabbing the lapel of his shirt in sheer desperation. “He’s a monster! He’ll tear this place apart to get to us!”
Alessandro didn't pull away. Instead, he reached up, placing his warm, strong hand over hers, gently unwinding her fingers from his shirt and holding them firmly in his palm.
“Sophia,” Alessandro said, his dark obsidian eyes locking onto hers with fierce, unshakeable devotion. “Look at me.”
She blinked through her tears, meeting his gaze.
“Thomas Vance is a coward who preys on the weak,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping an octave into a low, deadly purr. “He has stepped foot into a city I own, hunting people I protect. He has twenty-four hours before my men bring him to me bound and gagged.”

Alessandro squeezed her hand reassuringly.
“And when he gets here,” Alessandro continued, a chilling smile touching his lips, “he is going to discover that my dog isn't the only thing on this estate that bites.”
