Chapter 10 - Forever Moretti

The rain hammered against the reinforced glass of the Moretti estate, washing away the spring pollen and turning the Chicago streets into dark, slick rivers of reflections.

Inside the private study, the fire crackled with a warm, steady glow. Emma was fast asleep on the plush velvet rug, her head pillowed softly against Bruno’s warm, velvet-black flank. The massive Cane Corso let out a deep, contented sigh, his eyes half-closed as he stood sentinel over the sleeping child.

Across the room, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, Alessandro Moretti looked down at his phone. The screen displayed a single, encrypted photo sent by Mateo an hour earlier: an unconscious, bruised man tied securely to a chair in the subterranean holding cells beneath the estate. Thomas Vance’s hunt had ended the moment he crossed into Moretti territory.

Alessandro pressed a button, deleting the photo permanently, and slipped the phone into his pocket.

He turned around.

Sophia stood near the mahogany desk, holding a cup of untouched tea. Her hands were no longer shaking. The terror that had haunted her for eighteen months—the constant fear of looking over her shoulder, the ghost of an abusive past—had finally, utterly evaporated.

Alessandro walked slowly across the room, stopping just inches away from her. The scent of rain, cedar, and expensive cologne washed over her.

“It’s over,” Alessandro said quietly. “Thomas will never bother you or Emma again. He signed over all custody rights and agreed to vanish to the other side of the country. If he ever looks back toward Chicago, he won't live to regret it.”

Sophia looked up into those dark, intense eyes, tears of profound relief welling in her eyes.

“I don't know how to thank you, Alessandro,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “You saved us. You gave us a home when we had nothing.”

Alessandro reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her cheek. His touch lingered, his thumb tracing the curve of her jawline with a tenderness that contrasted sharply with the dangerous reputation he carried across the underworld.

“You didn't need to thank me, Sophia,” he murmured, his face drawing closer to hers. “From the moment that little girl walked up to my dog and taught him how to trust again... you all became my home.”

Sophia didn't pull away. As Alessandro’s lips met hers in a soft, tender kiss that tasted of quiet promises and a hard-won peace, the rain outside began to clear, letting a brilliant beam of golden evening sunlight flood through the grand windows of the estate.

On the rug, Emma stirred sleepily, rolling over to hug her teddy bear tighter, while Bruno let out a soft, happy huff, completely at peace in a world where everything finally belonged where it was supposed to be.
