Chapter 6 - Dawn over the Thames

The morning sun finally broke through the heavy London overcast, casting a pale, golden light across the sluggish, brown waters of the Thames.

At Cedarhaven—Viktor’s sprawling, heavily fortified estate overlooking the river—the atmosphere was entirely transformed. The heavy iron gates, usually a symbol of isolation and menace, stood open to receive a very different kind of visitor.

Inside the grand, marble-floored foyer, a team of personal shoppers and stylists had arrived at dawn. Mia stood on a velvet platform, looking bewildered and slightly overwhelmed as she tried on a soft, cream-colored cashmere coat that fit her small frame perfectly. Beside her, Shadow had been given a professional grooming session, and now sported a shiny, clean coat and a brand-new red leather collar with a polished silver tag bearing his name.

Leo walked down the grand staircase, still a bit pale but walking under his own power, wearing a comfortable fleece hoodie. He smiled as he saw Mia staring at herself in the grand gilded mirror.

—How does it feel, Mia?— Leo asked gently, leaning against the banister.

—It feels... warm,— she whispered, touching the soft fabric of the coat. —We never had clothes this soft before.—

—You're never going back to that cold yellow house down by the tracks, Mia,— a deep voice said from the doorway.

Viktor walked into the foyer, holding a thick, leather-bound portfolio. He handed it to Marcus, who stood waiting respectfully nearby.

—What is this, Mr. Draven?— Mia asked, tilting her head.

—That is a deed to a newly renovated home in Kensington, right next to the park,— Viktor said, kneeling down so he was eye-level with her. —It comes with a fully funded trust for your education, a lifetime retainer for Shadow’s veterinary care at the city's finest clinic, and a memorial foundation established in your father’s name to ensure the city never forgets what Arthur Vance did for public safety.—

Mia’s eyes welled up with tears—not tears of fear or hardship, but the overwhelming, sudden release of a lifetime of struggle. She didn't say a word; she simply threw her arms around Viktor’s neck, burying her face against his dark shoulder.

Viktor froze for a fraction of a second, unaccustomed to such pure, uncalculated affection. Then, slowly, his large arms wrapped around the little girl, holding her close, feeling the steady, living proof that goodness still existed in their dark world.
