Chapter 8 - The Snake in the Grass

Six months later. May 2027.

Spring had fully arrived at the Vance Estate. The grounds were a dazzling tapestry of blooming cherry blossoms, green lawns, and singing birds.

Lily was no longer the skittish, starved street child who had hid behind trees in Central Park. Her dark hair was long, healthy, and braided with silk ribbons. She wore a sunny yellow summer dress and had gained healthy weight, her cheeks rosy with life.

She stood in the estate's private library, leaning over a wide oak desk with Ethan—whose leg was fully healed—as they finished a massive 5,000-piece Lego castle together.

"Put the dragon on the highest tower, Lily!" Ethan giggled, handing her a plastic green dragon.

"Right here," Lily laughed, placing the dragon on the spire. "Now the castle is impenetrable!"

The door to the library opened softly. Thomas walked in, carrying a silver tray with iced lemonade and fresh berry tarts.

"A refreshment for the castle architects," Thomas smiled, placing the tray on a side table.

"Thank you, Thomas!" Ethan cheered, grabbing a tart.

As Thomas turned to leave, he paused, looking at Lily with a hint of concern. "Miss Lily, your father requested your presence in his study. Your aunt Evelyn has arrived for a formal settlement meeting."

Lily’s smile faded slightly at the mention of Evelyn. Over the past six months, Evelyn had been systematically removed from the corporate board after an independent audit revealed she had embezzled $12 million from Vance Global Logistics to fund her private investments. Today was the final legal signing where she would surrender her remaining shares in exchange for Arthur dropping federal criminal charges.

"I'll come right now, Thomas," Lily said smoothly.

She walked down the long carpeted hallway to Arthur’s private study. The double doors were slightly ajar.

As Lily reached the door, she heard Evelyn’s sharp, bitter voice coming from inside.

"You think you’ve won, don't you, Arthur?" Evelyn hissed. "You take in a street rat, pretend to be a saint, and strip me of my rightful inheritance!"

"You stripped yourself of your inheritance when you stole from this company, Evelyn," Arthur replied calmly from behind his desk. "I am letting you walk away without a prison sentence only because you are my mother's daughter. Sign the share release papers and leave my house."

"I’ll sign," Evelyn sneered, her pen scratching loudly against paper. "But don't think that little brat is going to inherit Vance Global. I’ve already filed a confidential petition with the federal tax court questioning the legitimacy of her trust fund allocations. She’ll be tie-up in litigation for twenty years!"

Lily felt a sudden flash of anger—not fear, but pure, protective anger for Arthur.

She pushed the heavy oak doors wide open and stepped into the room.

Evelyn spun around, her eyes narrowing as she saw Lily standing there—tall, proud, poised, and looking every bit like a true Vance heiress.

"Aunt Evelyn," Lily said, her voice smooth, icy, and completely devoid of fear. "You forgot one thing about street kids."

Evelyn frowned, taken aback by the girl’s absolute confidence. "What are you talking about?"

"Street kids know how to listen," Lily said, pulling a sleek silver voice recorder from her dress pocket and setting it on Arthur’s desk. "I’ve been recording the intercom system from the library since you walked into this house ten minutes ago. You just admitted on tape to bribing a federal tax court clerk to launch a fraudulent investigation against my trust."

Evelyn’s face went completely drain of color. She dropped her pen, staggering back against the leather sofa. "You... you little monster..."

Arthur stood up from his desk, a lethal, triumphant smile breaking across his face. He picked up the voice recorder, tapped the screen, and looked at his sister.

"Attempted extortion of a minor," Arthur said softly. "Thomas! Call federal marshals. It seems my sister won't be enjoying her retirement after all."

Evelyn let out a choked gasp, grabbing her purse and sprinting out of the study, her heels clicking frantically down the hallway as security guards moved to intercept her at the front gate.

Arthur walked around his desk, looked down at Lily, and burst into a loud, booming laugh—a laugh so full of genuine joy it warmed the entire room.

May you like

"Where on earth did you learn that maneuver, Lily?" Arthur asked, sweeping her up into a proud hug.

"From you, Dad," Lily smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You told me never to go into a battle without holding the high ground."
