Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Sanctuary

The grand glass facade of the La Jolla villa was shattered, rain pouring into the elegant living room.
Claire huddled in the dark, reinforced steel panic room beneath the master suite. Her hands were wrapped tightly around her stomach, her heart hammering so hard she could hear it in her ears. Outside, the muffled thuds of heavy footsteps and the sharp cracks of automatic gunfire echoed through the vents.
She had her laptop open on her lap.
On the screen was a blinking green progress bar: DECRYPTION COMPLETE. FILE UPLOADED.
She had done it. She had bypassed Caleb’s encrypted files and uncovered the offshore transaction ledger. It was all there: a payment of three hundred thousand dollars from Julian Moretti’s shell company to Caleb Ross, dated the exact day of the auction, with the memo "Asset Acquisition." It was the smoking gun. It proved that Caleb had sold his wife to Adrian’s uncle, and that Adrian’s "purchase" was a rescue intervention.
But the victory felt hollow as a loud explosion shook the panic room door. The steel groaned, the electronic lock sparking.
"She’s in here!" a voice shouted from the other side. It was Dean Mallory. "Get the breaching charge! Julian wants her alive, but he doesn't care if she's bruised!"
Claire closed the laptop, holding it to her chest like a shield. She looked around the small room. There were no weapons, only a first-aid kit and some emergency water bottles. She was trapped.
"Please, Adrian," she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "Please come back."
The door exploded inward with a deafening boom.
Thick smoke poured into the room. Claire coughed, shielding her eyes. Through the haze, Officer Dean Mallory stepped in, his face twisted in a smug, victorious grin. He was holding a heavy pistol.
"Well, well, Claire," Mallory sneered, walking over and grabbing her by the arm, dragging her out of the smoke-filled room. "You’ve been a very difficult woman to find. Your husband is very eager to see you. And so is Julian."
"Let go of me!" Claire screamed, struggling against his grip. "You’re a criminal! I have the financial records! I’ve already uploaded them to the federal database! You’re going to prison, Mallory!"
Mallory’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, murderous glare. "Then we’ll just have to make sure you don't live long enough to testify."
He dragged her out into the ruined living room, where two of his men were waiting. The rain was pouring through the shattered ceiling, soaking them to the bone.
"Take her to the car," Mallory ordered.
"I don't think so, Dean," a voice echoed from the darkness of the ruined hallway.
Mallory froze.
Adrian Moretti stepped out of the shadows. He was soaked with rain, his dark hair plastered to his forehead. He was unarmed, his hands held open at his sides. But his eyes... his eyes were the eyes of a man who had already decided how everyone in the room was going to die.
Behind him, Dominic and ten heavily armed Moretti loyalists stepped out, their red laser sights painting Mallory and his men like a target.
"Adrian!" Claire cried.
"Step back, Moretti!" Mallory shouted, pulling Claire in front of him as a human shield, pressing the cold barrel of his gun against her temple. "You fire one shot, and she dies! I’ll blow her head off!"
Adrian did not flinch. He took a slow, deliberate step forward. "You won't shoot her, Dean. Because if you do, you have no leverage. And I will skin you alive in front of your men."
"Try me!" Mallory yelled, his hand shaking.
"Caleb is already in custody," Adrian said, his voice deadly calm. "He confessed. He told us about the bribes, the auction, and Julian’s plan. Your career is over, Dean. Your life as a cop is over. But if you let her go now, I might let you walk out of this city alive."
Mallory’s eyes darted around the room, realizing he was completely surrounded. His men were already lowering their weapons, terrified of the laser dots on their chests.
"Julian promised me protection!" Mallory stammered.
"Julian is currently being arrested by his own captains," Adrian said, taking another step closer. "The family commission has seen the financial records Claire uncovered. They know Julian was running an unsanctioned human trafficking ring using the family name. In our world, Dean, that is a death sentence. Julian has no power. He cannot save you."
Mallory looked at Claire, then at Adrian. The panic in his eyes was absolute. He realized he was holding a tiger by the tail, and there was no way to let go.
With a desperate cry, Mallory threw Claire toward Adrian and raised his gun to shoot.
But Adrian was faster.
In a fraction of a second, Adrian caught Claire with his left arm, spinning her behind him, while his right hand drew his concealed weapon. Three deafening shots rang out.
Mallory fell to the floor, his gun clattering away. He was dead before he hit the shattered glass.
Adrian immediately dropped his weapon and turned to Claire, pulling her into his arms, holding her so tightly she could feel the trembling of his muscles. "I have you. I have you, Claire. You're safe. You're safe."

Claire buried her face in his neck, sobbing with a mixture of terror and pure, overwhelming relief. "The baby... Adrian, the baby is okay."
"I know," Adrian whispered, his tears mixing with the rain on her face. "I know. It's over, my love. It's finally over."
