Chapter 3 - The Leak and the Lockdown

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the storm had cleared over San Diego, but a digital hurricane had made landfall.
Inside the Sanctuary, Claire sat at the kitchen island, watching the flat-screen television. The news anchor’s voice was grim, filled with a sensationalized urgency.
"...shocking footage leaked anonymously online late last night appears to show Adrian Moretti, the alleged head of the Moretti syndicate, participating in an underground auction on a private yacht. The victim has been identified as twenty-seven-year-old Claire Bennett, who was reported missing by her husband, Caleb Ross, yesterday afternoon. San Diego Police Officer Dean Mallory held a press conference hours ago, calling Moretti a 'monster' and demanding federal intervention..."
The screen flashed to a grainy, night-vision video. It showed Claire, dressed in a white silk dress, standing on a stage, her eyes filled with tears. It showed Adrian standing in the crowd, raising his bidding card. The audio was distorted, but the words "Three hundred thousand dollars" were clear. The video cut off just as Adrian approached her, leaving the viewer to imagine the worst.
Claire felt a cold dread wash over her. She gripped the edge of the marble counter, her breathing shallow.
"They're lying," she whispered, her voice trembling. "They edited out everything after. They didn't show that you gave me a safe room, that you never laid a finger on me, that you let me go!"
"Of course they didn't," Adrian said, walking into the kitchen. He was dressed in a dark tactical turtleneck, a holster strapped to his chest. He looked calm, but it was the calm of a hurricane's eye. "My uncle Julian is behind this. He wants to force my hand. He wants me to panic, to run, or to fight the police. Either way, it discredits me."
"Adrian, the FBI will come here," Claire said, tears spilling over. "They will arrest you. And Caleb... he will take me back. He told the media I was kidnapped!"
Adrian walked over to her. He did not hesitate this time. He reached out and cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. "Look at me, Claire."
She looked into his intense, stormy eyes.
"No one is arresting me. And no one is taking you back," Adrian said, his voice a solid, unbreakable promise. "I have already mobilized my legal team. We are filing a counter-suit for defamation, and we have the full, unedited security footage of that night from the yacht’s internal mainframe. My tech team is decrypting it now. Once we release the full video, Julian's narrative will collapse."
"But what about Officer Mallory?" Claire asked. "He’s a cop. People believe him."
"Mallory is a criminal with a badge," Adrian said coldly. "Dominic has been tracking him. He just met with Julian’s men at a private warehouse near the docks. We are going to pay them a visit."
"No, Adrian, it's a trap!" Claire grabbed his wrists. "They want you to go there. They want a shootout. If you get killed, or if you get arrested for killing a cop, Julian wins!"
"I am not going there to start a war, Claire. I am going there to end one," Adrian said, kissing her forehead gently. "Dominic and a full security team are staying here to guard you. The villa is under total lockdown. No one enters, no one leaves. I will be back before dark."
"Please," Claire whispered, her hand resting on his chest, feeling his strong, steady heartbeat. "Come back to me. To us."
Adrian’s hand covered hers. "I always come back for you, Claire."
As Adrian and his men departed in a convoy of armored SUVs, Claire watched them go from the reinforced window. She felt a deep, aching fear, not just for herself, but for the man who had risked everything to save her. She realized, with a sudden, beautiful clarity, that she was no longer just a victim running from her abuser. She was a woman in love with her protector. And she had to find a way to help him fight.
She turned to Dr. Helen Vance, who was preparing a nutrient IV. "Helen. I need a laptop. And I need access to the Moretti family's financial database."
Helen looked surprised. "Claire, Adrian wants you to rest."

"I am a forensic accountant, Helen," Claire said, her eyes burning with a sudden, fierce determination. "Caleb used to make me manage his shell companies. He’s sloppy. And if he’s working with Julian Moretti, they’ve left a paper trail. If I can find the transaction where Caleb sold me to pay his gambling debts, we can prove the auction was a transaction between them. We can prove Adrian didn't traffic me—he rescued me from a sale orchestrated by my own husband."
Helen stared at her for a moment, then a slow, admiring smile spread across her face. "I'll get you the laptop."
