Chapter 4: The Night of the Escape

Chapter 4: The Night of the Escape

The pounding on the door didn’t stop.

It became rhythmic.

Controlled.

Like whoever was outside already knew they had all the time in the world.

“Mrs. Carter…”

Dr. Harrison’s voice slipped through the metal frame again, calm and precise.

“You have forty-five seconds now.”

Inside the room, everything froze.

Even the baby’s soft breathing seemed to disappear into silence.

Sarah clutched the lockbox so tightly her fingers went numb.

Emily stood in front of her, small but unshaking, holding her baby brother like she was ready to fight the entire world again if she had to.

Claire was already moving.

She dragged a chair toward the door and jammed it under the handle.

“It won’t hold long,” she said.

Linda stepped forward, her face pale but focused.

“It doesn’t have to.”

Sarah looked at her mother for the first time without anger—only confusion and something closer to fear.

“What are you planning?”

Linda didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she opened the lockbox Sarah was holding and quickly scanned the contents.

Her hands stopped on a USB drive.

“This one,” she said.

Claire leaned closer.

“That’s the master file?”

Linda nodded once.

“All transfers. All payments. Every name.”

A loud metallic clang shook the door.

Thirty seconds.

Emily whispered, “Mom… they’re really coming.”

Sarah pulled her daughter close.

“I know.”

For a moment, everything felt suspended between two breaths—like the entire hospital was waiting for the decision that would change everything.

Then Linda spoke again.

“There’s a maintenance tunnel behind the nursery wall.”

Claire blinked.

“That’s not on any map.”

Linda gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Of course it isn’t.”

She pointed toward the far corner of the room, behind a cabinet.

“I helped design it.”

Sarah stared at her.

“You… what?”

Linda didn’t look at her.

Not now.

“Later,” she said. “If we survive.”

The door shuddered again.

Fifteen seconds.

Claire rushed to the cabinet and began pulling it away with Emily’s help.

A thin outline of metal appeared behind it—a hidden panel, old and slightly rusted.

Claire found the latch and pulled.

A narrow passage opened.

Cold air rushed in from the darkness.

A maintenance tunnel.

Real.

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

“This leads where?”

“Basement corridors,” Linda said. “Then service exit—if we’re lucky.”

Another bang hit the door.

Ten seconds.

Dr. Harrison’s voice turned colder.

“This is your final warning.”

Emily looked up at Sarah.

“Mom, I don’t want them to take him again.”

Sarah kissed her forehead.

“They won’t.”

But she wasn’t sure she believed it.

Linda stepped into the tunnel first.

“Now.”

Claire followed.

Sarah hesitated only a second longer, then took the baby and climbed in behind Emily.

The darkness swallowed them immediately.

Behind them—

The door exploded inward.

The tunnel was nothing like Sarah expected.

It wasn’t just a narrow maintenance shaft.

It stretched deeper, branching into old hospital infrastructure—pipes overhead, damp concrete walls, flickering emergency lights that barely worked.

Every step echoed.

Every sound felt like it could give them away.

Claire led the way.

Linda followed close behind.

Sarah walked in the middle, protecting Emily and the baby with her body.

Behind them, somewhere above—

Footsteps.

Multiple.

“They’re moving through the ward,” Claire whispered.

“How many?” Sarah asked.

“Too many.”

The group turned sharply into another corridor.

A rusted sign read:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY – SUBLEVEL 3

Emily whispered, “It smells weird down here.”

“Old hospital,” Linda said quietly. “And secrets.”

Sarah tightened her grip on her son.

“What is this place really?”

Linda didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she stopped walking.

So did everyone else.

A faint sound echoed ahead.

A baby crying.

Sarah froze.

“That’s not—”

“I know,” Claire interrupted.

The crying wasn’t random.

It was rhythmic.

Controlled.

Like a recording played through hidden speakers.

Linda’s jaw tightened.

“They’re using decoys.”

“Why?”

“To slow us down,” Claire said. “Or to make us turn back.”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t like this.”

“Neither do I,” Sarah whispered.

But they kept moving.

Above them, the hospital had transformed into something else.

A controlled lockdown grid.

Doors sealed.

Corridors isolated.

Security teams sweeping every floor.

Dr. Harrison stood in the central control room, watching monitors.

The scarred man stood beside him.

“They went into sublevel access,” Harrison said.

The man frowned.

“That tunnel shouldn’t exist on record.”

Harrison glanced sideways.

“It doesn’t.”

A pause.

Then he added,

“Except in her memory.”

The scarred man narrowed his eyes.

“Linda built it?”

“No,” Harrison replied. “She just survived it.”

He tapped a screen.

Camera feeds flickered.

One corridor showed nothing but darkness.

Another showed an empty nursery.

Then—

A sudden motion.

Emily briefly appeared on camera before disappearing again.

The scarred man smiled.

“She’s with them.”

Harrison didn’t smile back.

“She always was the problem.”

“Do we proceed with extraction?”

Harrison nodded slowly.

“Recover the infant.”

“And the others?”

A pause.

Then:

“Terminate interference.”

The scarred man turned toward the exit.

“Finally.”

Back in the tunnels, the air grew colder.

Claire suddenly stopped.

“Wait.”

Everyone froze.

She listened.

Footsteps.

Not behind them.

Ahead.

Emily grabbed Sarah’s hand.

“Mom…”

Sarah crouched instantly.

“Quiet.”

A shape appeared at the end of the corridor.

A man.

Security uniform.

But wrong.

Too clean.

Too calm.

He raised a flashlight.

The beam swept slowly across the tunnel walls.

Claire pulled everyone back behind a pipe cluster.

The light passed.

Stopped.

For a moment.

Sarah held her breath so hard her chest hurt.

The guard spoke into his radio.

“Section C-12 clear.”

Then he paused.

“Wait—movement near sublevel junction.”

He stepped forward.

Closer.

Too close.

Emily squeezed her eyes shut.

The guard was now only a few meters away.

Then—

A loud crash echoed from behind him.

The guard spun instantly.

“Who’s there?”

A second later, something hit the ground further down the tunnel.

He moved away quickly.

Disappearing into darkness.

Claire exhaled sharply.

“That was close.”

Sarah looked around.

“Who made the noise?”

No one answered.

Then Emily whispered,

“I think it was Grandma.”

They reached a larger junction.

Three tunnels split in different directions.

Linda studied the markings on the wall.

“This one,” she said.

Claire frowned.

“How do you know?”

Linda touched the concrete lightly.

“I used to run drills down here.”

Sarah stared at her.

“Drills?”

Linda finally looked at her directly.

“Emergency neonatal evacuation protocols.”

Silence.

Claire’s face tightened.

“That doesn’t exist.”

“It did,” Linda corrected.

“Before it was repurposed.”

“Repurposed for what?” Sarah asked.

Linda didn’t answer.

Instead, she started walking again.

But before she could take more than two steps—

A sound echoed behind them.

Metal scraping.

Then footsteps.

Many.

Emily whispered urgently,

“They found us.”

Claire turned pale.

“That wasn’t a patrol.”

Linda nodded once.

“No.”

Sarah tightened her grip on the baby.

“Then what is it?”

Linda’s voice dropped.

“Recovery team.”

The tunnel lights above them flickered violently.

Then—

A loud announcement echoed through hidden speakers.

“ALL UNITS: INFANT RECOVERY PROTOCOL ACTIVE.”

Emily clung to Sarah.

“I don’t like that word.”

“Neither do I,” Sarah said.

Footsteps echoed faster now.

Closer.

Linda pointed forward.

“Run.”

They ran.

The tunnel twisted downward sharply, leading into a wider maintenance chamber filled with old pipes and industrial machinery.

Behind them—

Flashlights appeared.

At least five.

Maybe more.

Claire shouted, “Left!”

They turned.

Another corridor.

Then another.

The hospital was no longer a building.

It was a maze designed to trap them.

Sarah’s lungs burned.

Her stitches screamed in pain.

But she didn’t stop.

Not once.

Emily kept up without crying.

The baby stayed silent.

Almost too silent.

Finally, they reached a heavy steel door.

Linda slammed her hand against a panel.

It beeped.

Red.

“Locked,” Claire said.

Linda tried again.

Beep.

Red.

Footsteps behind them grew louder.

Emily whispered, “Mom…”

Sarah looked at Linda.

“Open it.”

Linda closed her eyes for a second.

Then she pressed a hidden sequence on the panel.

Beep.

Green.

The door unlocked.

It opened just as the first flashlight beam hit the corridor behind them.

They slipped through—

And the door slammed shut.

Locking automatically.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then—

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

From the other side.

They were safe.

For now.

They stood in a narrow service hall.

Dim lights flickered above.

Claire leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

“That won’t hold them long.”

Linda nodded.

“It wasn’t meant to.”

Sarah turned to her.

“What is this place?”

Linda finally answered.

Her voice quiet.

“This is where they used to erase people.”

Silence.

Emily whispered,

“Erase?”

Linda looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Babies… records… mothers.”

Sarah’s voice broke slightly.

“And us?”

Linda met her eyes.

“Only if they succeed.”

A distant explosion echoed somewhere in the hospital above them.

The lights flickered again.

Claire straightened.

“They’re escalating.”

Linda nodded.

“Then we move faster.”

She pointed toward the end of the corridor.

“There’s an exit gate two levels down.”

Sarah adjusted the baby in her arms.

“And then?”

Linda looked at her.

“Then we end it.”

As they started walking again, Sarah noticed something strange.

A small security camera in the corner.

Its red light blinked.

Following them.

Watching.

And somewhere far above—

Dr. Harrison’s voice came through the system.

Calm.

Certain.

“You can run anywhere in this building.”

“But you will still bring him back.”

A pause.

Then softer:

“He was never meant to leave.”

The corridor lights went out.

Total darkness swallowed them.

And in the silence that followed—

Emily whispered:

May you like

“Mom… I think they know exactly where we are.”
