Chapter 2: The Woman in Room 312

Chapter 2: The Woman in Room 312

Sarah's hands trembled so violently that the yellow patient file nearly slipped from her fingers.

Across the top of the page, the words TRANSFER APPROVED stared back at her like a death sentence.

Beneath them was another forged signature.

Her name.

Her handwriting.

But not her signature.

Someone had practiced it carefully.

Perfectly.

Emily tugged gently on her mother's sleeve.

"Mom..."

Sarah snapped the folder shut.

"We have to get back inside."

The hallway suddenly felt too open.

Too quiet.

Too many security cameras watched every corner.

Too many people wore smiles that no longer looked kind.

She slipped back into Room 308 just as a nurse pushed a cart past the doorway.

The nurse smiled politely.

Sarah forced herself to smile back.

The moment the footsteps faded, she locked the door.

Click.

Emily looked up.

"Are we in trouble?"

Sarah knelt painfully in front of her daughter.

"I don't know."

"Did Grandma lie?"

Sarah couldn't answer.

Not yet.

Linda had practically raised Emily.

She had been there through every birthday, every scraped knee, every bedtime story.

The woman Sarah knew couldn't possibly be involved in something so monstrous.

Could she?

Sarah opened the folder again.

Most of the paperwork made little sense.

Medical abbreviations.

Transfer requests.

Identification numbers.

One page listed four newborns.

Three names had thick black check marks beside them.

The fourth line had only one word.

Pending.

Next to it...

Baby Carter.

Sarah's heart skipped.

Pending?

Pending what?

Her phone buzzed.

She grabbed it immediately.

MARK ❤️

Relief washed over her.

She answered before the first ring finished.

"Mark!"

Silence.

Only static.

"Mark? Can you hear me?"

A man's voice finally came through.

Soft.

Whispering.

"Don't trust..."

The call cut off.

Sarah stared at the screen.

Connection Lost.

She called back immediately.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

Emily watched her mother's face.

"Dad?"

"I can't reach him."

Sarah tried texting.

Please answer. Something is wrong.

Message failed.

No signal.

That made no sense.

Her phone had worked perfectly earlier.

She looked toward the hallway.

Someone had installed a portable signal jammer.

Or perhaps the maternity ward blocked reception.

Either way...

She suddenly felt trapped.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Three slow knocks.

Not a nurse's quick tap.

Sarah froze.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

Another knock.

Emily moved behind her mother.

Sarah carefully approached the door.

She looked through the narrow viewing window.

No one.

Empty hallway.

She slowly unlocked the door.

The corridor remained deserted.

Then she noticed something on the floor.

A folded note.

She picked it up.

Only five words were written inside.

Room 312. Come alone.

No signature.

No explanation.

Emily whispered,

"Who left it?"

"I don't know."

"Don't go."

Sarah looked toward the bassinet.

Toward her sleeping son.

Then back to the note.

Someone wanted her.

But why?

An hour later...

Linda returned carrying coffee and a stuffed teddy bear.

She smiled warmly.

"There's my beautiful grandson."

Sarah watched every movement.

Every expression.

Every blink.

Was this woman acting?

Or was Sarah imagining everything?

Linda kissed the baby's forehead.

"How are you feeling?"

"Tired."

"I'm not surprised."

Linda sat beside the bed.

"I spoke with Dr. Harrison."

Sarah's stomach tightened.

Dr. Harrison.

Finally, a name.

"He says you'll probably go home tomorrow."

Sarah nodded.

"That's good."

Linda studied her carefully.

"Everything okay?"

Sarah forced another smile.

"I just wish Mark would answer."

Linda hesitated.

"I'm sure he's driving."

Maybe.

Or maybe not.

Sarah decided to test her.

"Linda..."

"Hm?"

"Did I sign any paperwork after labor?"

For the first time all day...

Linda looked uncomfortable.

"It was probably routine."

"So yes?"

"I honestly don't remember."

Lie.

Sarah knew it instantly.

Linda remembered everything.

Always.

The conversation ended when another nurse entered to check the baby's temperature.

Linda excused herself to make another phone call.

Sarah waited exactly thirty seconds before quietly following her.

Emily remained inside the room with the baby.

Sarah stepped into the hallway.

Linda stood near the elevators with her back turned.

She spoke softly into her phone.

"...she found something."

Sarah's heartbeat quickened.

"...yes."

Pause.

"I'll keep her calm."

Another pause.

"No."

"She doesn't suspect me."

Sarah stepped backward before Linda could turn around.

Her chest tightened.

Emily had been right.

Linda was hiding something.

But what?

Sarah returned to her room unnoticed.

She found Emily sitting quietly beside the bassinet.

"I have to go somewhere."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"No."

"I won't be long."

"Don't."

Sarah knelt again.

"I need answers."

Emily looked toward the sleeping baby.

"What if they come back?"

Sarah swallowed.

She couldn't leave both children alone.

Not anymore.

Just then...

A gentle knock sounded.

Sarah opened the door only a few inches.

Standing outside was an elderly volunteer pushing a cart of books.

"Reading material?"

Sarah almost declined.

Then the woman quietly slipped another folded note into Sarah's hand.

Without saying a word.

She continued down the hallway.

Sarah unfolded it.

Laundry room. Five minutes.

This time, a small symbol appeared underneath.

Room 312.

Someone inside that room wanted to help.

Sarah made her decision.

"Emily."

"I'm coming with you."

"No."

"You stay here."

Emily crossed her arms.

"I'm not leaving my brother."

Sarah smiled despite everything.

"So stubborn."

"I learned from you."

Sarah kissed both of her children.

"I'll be right back."

She slipped into the hallway.

Every step hurt.

The maternity wing seemed strangely empty.

Almost too empty.

She passed the nurses' station.

No one looked up.

She reached the service corridor.

Laundry Room.

Inside...

Industrial washing machines hummed loudly.

Steam filled the air.

At first she thought she was alone.

Then a voice came from behind stacked linen carts.

"You came."

A woman slowly stepped into view.

She looked exhausted.

Dark circles shadowed her eyes.

Hospital bracelet.

Fresh stitches.

Just like Sarah.

"My name is Claire."

Sarah recognized her immediately.

The woman whose room number appeared on the forged documents.

Room 312.

"You left the notes?"

Claire nodded.

"You found my file."

Sarah stared.

"Who are you?"

"A mother."

Claire smiled sadly.

"Just like you."

"What do you want?"

Claire looked toward the closed door before answering.

"I want you to survive."

Sarah frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Claire took a deep breath.

"My daughter was born here."

Sarah looked confused.

"You just gave birth?"

"No."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Two years ago."

Silence.

"They told me she died."

Sarah's heart sank.

"I'm sorry."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"No."

"They lied."

"What?"

"I heard her cry."

"I held her."

"I kissed her."

"She was healthy."

Sarah felt goosebumps rise across her arms.

"The next morning..."

Claire continued.

"They told me she stopped breathing."

"But they never let me see her."

Sarah couldn't speak.

"I asked for an autopsy."

"They refused."

"I asked for hospital records."

"They disappeared."

"I asked for security footage."

"It had been erased."

Sarah whispered,

"You think someone took your baby?"

Claire met her eyes.

"I know they did."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Sarah remembered the doctor's words.

The receiving family has completed payment.

Claire continued.

"I spent two years investigating."

"No one believed me."

"They called me unstable."

"They blamed grief."

"But I kept searching."

She reached into her purse.

Several photographs spilled onto a table.

Pictures of newborn bracelets.

Hospital invoices.

Medical charts.

Names.

Dates.

Transfer records.

Every one connected to this hospital.

"There are others."

Claire pointed toward the files.

"Nine mothers."

"Nine babies."

Sarah slowly turned the pages.

Every case followed the same pattern.

Healthy birth.

Unexpected complication.

Restricted visitation.

Baby removed.

Records altered.

Sarah's breathing became shallow.

"This can't be real."

"I wish it weren't."

Claire looked directly into her eyes.

"They're doing it again."

"With your son."

"No..."

Sarah whispered.

Claire nodded.

"They've already started preparing the paperwork."

Sarah remembered the forged consent forms.

Her signature.

The transfer approval.

Everything suddenly connected.

Then Claire said something that froze Sarah completely.

"Have you checked your baby's identification bracelet?"

Sarah nodded slowly.

"The birth time was wrong."

Claire closed her eyes.

"They changed mine too."

Sarah's knees weakened.

"What does that mean?"

Claire answered quietly.

"It means your baby has already been entered into another file."

Sarah stared in horror.

Another file.

Another family.

Another life.

Just then...

A loud announcement echoed throughout the hospital.

Attention all maternity staff. Routine nursery inspection in five minutes.

Claire's face drained of color.

"They're moving them."

"What?"

"The babies."

"Every inspection is actually a transfer."

Sarah's heart pounded.

"I have to get back."

She turned toward the door.

Claire grabbed her wrist.

"One more thing."

Sarah looked back.

"Trust your daughter."

"What?"

"Children notice things adults ignore."

Claire hesitated.

"And don't trust every police officer."

Sarah blinked.

"What do you mean?"

Before Claire could answer...

Voices approached outside the laundry room.

Male voices.

Several of them.

Claire whispered urgently,

"Hide."

"No."

"They'll find us."

Claire shoved Sarah behind a stack of clean sheets.

The door burst open.

Dr. Harrison entered.

Behind him stood the tall man in the gray suit Emily had described.

A long scar stretched across his left cheek.

Sarah held her breath.

She could see them through a narrow gap in the linens.

The gray-suited man tossed a thick envelope onto the table.

Cash.

Bundles of cash.

Dr. Harrison frowned.

"Not here."

"No one comes into the laundry room."

The scarred man laughed.

"They're just mothers."

"They're too exhausted to notice anything."

Sarah felt sick.

Claire remained perfectly still.

The doctor opened a folder.

"How many tonight?"

The scarred man answered without emotion.

"Three."

Dr. Harrison flipped through several pages.

"Room 306."

"Room 311."

Then...

He stopped.

"Room 308."

Sarah's blood turned to ice.

Her room.

Her baby.

The scarred man smiled.

"The Carter infant leaves before sunrise."

Dr. Harrison nodded.

"And the mother?"

The answer came so casually that Sarah almost couldn't believe she'd heard it.

"She'll sign."

"If she refuses..."

The scarred man shrugged.

"She won't remember refusing."

Sarah clamped both hands over her mouth to stop herself from gasping.

Outside...

Footsteps echoed again.

Someone else was approaching.

Dr. Harrison quickly closed the folder.

The laundry room door opened once more.

Sarah expected another doctor.

Instead...

Grandma Linda walked inside.

And when the scarred man handed her the envelope of cash...

May you like

She accepted it without saying a single word.
