Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Fall

Chaos erupted in less than a heartbeat.

Before the nearest mercenary could swing his carbine toward the child, the Warden launched itself into the air like a guided missile of pure muscle and fury. It hit the lead mercenary squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward into the glass display case with a deafening shatter of splintered wood and falling trophies.

"Shoot it! Shoot the damn dog!" Anton shrieked, scrambling backward over his leather chair, his composure entirely shattered.

Bullets chewed into the Persian rug, spraying wood splinters and plaster as Castellano's loyal guards opened fire on Anton's mercenaries. Salvo ducked behind the heavy oak doorframe, returning rapid, calculated shots that dropped two of the rogue gunmen before they could adjust their sights.

The room transformed into a deafening storm of muzzle flashes, shattering glass, and shouting men. Yet, through the center of the violence, a surreal stillness remained.

Lily stood completely calm beside Damon, her small hand resting unconcernedly on the edge of the table as the Warden systematically dismantled Anton’s security detail with cold, terrifying efficiency. Within thirty seconds, four of the mercenaries were disarmed, pinned to the floor, or unconscious. The remaining two threw down their weapons and raised their hands, backing against the wall with pale, sweating faces.

Anton stumbled toward the side exit, his bespoke suit torn, his face slick with panic. He reached inside his jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of a hidden nickel-plated revolver.

"You think you won, Damon?" Anton snarled, whipping the pistol around and aiming it straight at Damon's chest. "It doesn't matter! The transfer codes are already sent to Zurich! Even if I die, your entire empire goes dark in ten minutes!"

He pulled the trigger.

Click.

Anton’s eyes bulged. He pulled it again. Click. Click.

From the shadows behind the side door, a figure stepped smoothly into the dim light. A woman wearing a dark trench coat, her copper-brown hair falling past her shoulders, her green eyes shining with an icy, razor-sharp intelligence that matched Damon's own.

In her right hand, she held the firing pin and magazine of Anton’s revolver, which she had quietly stripped from his weapon while standing right behind him in the dark.

"You really should check your sidearm before you try to play hero, Anton," Elena said, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly devastating.

Anton stared at her as if he were looking at a ghost risen from the grave. "Elena... no. That's... that's impossible. We buried you—"

"You tried," Elena replied, taking another step forward. "Just like you tried to bury my work, my life, and everything I built. But some things are harder to kill than a weed in a concrete slab."

Damon stood motionless, the world around him fading into absolute silence. The noise of the gunfire, the groans of the wounded mercenaries, the shattered glass—everything vanished. There was only her.

Elena.

After three long, agonizing years of searching every dark corner of the globe, she was standing right here, ten feet away, looking just as fierce, just as brilliant, and just as breathtaking as the day she walked out of his life.

Elena turned her head, meeting Damon’s intense, unblinking gaze across the room. A soft, knowing smile touched her lips.

"Hello, Damon," she said quietly. "Did you miss me?"
