Chapter 9 - THE FIREFLIES OF CAPRI

Three months later.

The Vance family traveled to their private estate on the island of Capri, Italy—a breathtaking white villa set high on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

The heavy black armor, armed guards, and constant threat of war were replaced by sunny gardens, olive trees, and the warm ocean breeze.

On a warm summer evening, as fireflies danced through the lemon groves, I sat on the terrace playing a gentle melody on an acoustic guitar. Leo—now over a year old and walking on sturdy little legs—chased a golden retriever puppy across the grass, his loud, joyful laughter echoing through the warm air.

Julian walked out onto the terrace carrying two glasses of sparkling wine. He had traded his sharp black suits for a casual linen shirt, looking younger, relaxed, and deeply at peace.

He set the glasses down and sat beside me on the stone bench, pulling me close against his side.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Julian asked, kissing the top of my head.

I rested my head against his shoulder, watching our son play in the garden. "I was thinking about the night at Bellagio. How afraid I was when you walked in with that baby."

Julian chuckled softly, running his fingers through my hair. "And now?"

"Now I know that walking toward you was the best decision of my life," I whispered.

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My heart skipped a beat.

He dropped to one knee before me on the stone terrace under the starlit Italian sky. He opened the box to reveal a stunning cushion-cut diamond ring, glistening like moonlight on the water.

"Mara," Julian said, his dark eyes shining with intense, devotion. "You walked into my life when it was broken and dark. You saved my son, you healed my heart, and you brought light back into this family. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife... my Queen... my forever?"

Tears of pure joy welled up in my eyes. I threw my arms around his neck, pressing my lips to his in a passionate, desperate kiss that spoke of every trial we had overcome together.

"Yes!" I sobbed happily against his lips. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

Leo came running over, barking happily alongside the puppy, hopping up and down to join our embrace. Julian lifted both of us into his arms, holding his family tight under the glowing Italian moon.
