Professor Harrington could barely contain his excitement.
"My God..."
He carefully opened the first page.

My grandmother sat quietly beside the window.

I stared at her.
"My mother knew?"
She nodded.

She smiled faintly.

The professor read aloud from one faded document.
"When the Crown Purge began, Princess Eleanor escaped through underground tunnels with her infant son."
He slowly looked at me.
"Your ancestors."
The room became unbearably still.
"The royal bloodline never disappeared."
My grandmother sighed.
"We changed our names."
"We lived ordinary lives."
"We became teachers... farmers... mechanics..."
"And seamstresses."
She gently touched my torn dress.
"I hid the packet inside because nobody would ever steal an old patched-up dress."
Professor Harrington suddenly stopped reading.
His expression changed.
"There are missing pages."
My grandmother's smile disappeared.
"I know."
"Who has them?"
She looked out the window.
"They found me twenty years ago."
"Who?"
She whispered one terrifying sentence.

A black SUV stopped outside the house.
