Chapter 8 - The Settlement

Three months later, the conference room at Victoria Vance’s law firm felt less like a battlefield and more like a coronation.

The divorce decree sat in front of Laura, crisp, clean, and finalized down to the last legal detail. It was a total victory.

Under the terms of the mediated settlement:

The House: The marital home was signed entirely over to Laura, free and clear of any encumbrances, with Diego forced to relinquish all secondary claims.

Financial Restitution: All frozen joint assets were restored to Laura, plus a lump-sum punitive settlement for emotional distress and financial abandonment, effectively stripping Diego of his savings and forcing him to liquidate his luxury car.

Child Support & Custody: Strict joint legal custody with primary physical custody awarded to Laura. Diego was mandated to pay maximum tier child support, indexed annually to inflation, alongside guaranteed coverage for all medical and educational expenses.

Defamation Retraction: Diego was required to post a formal, public retraction on his social media accounts acknowledging that his previous statements regarding infidelity were entirely false and defamatory.

Victoria slid the document across the mahogany table along with a sleek silver pen.

“Read it over one last time, Laura, but I promise you, it’s airtight. Your ex-husband’s attorney didn't even try to fight the asset clawback. They knew we had them dead to rights on financial misconduct and defamation.”

Laura picked up the pen. Her hand was steady. There was no shaking today, no fear, no hesitation. She signed her name cleanly and decisively across the signature line: Laura Costello.

Wait—no. She crossed out the 'Costello' with a firm stroke and wrote her maiden name, the name she had foolishly abandoned eight years ago when she thought marriage meant losing herself: Laura Vance.

Victoria grinned approvingly. “Welcome back, my dear.”
