Chapter 2 - The Tables Turn

For ten long seconds, nobody breathed.
Diego took a half-step backward, bumping against the doorframe. The swagger that had carried him into the clinic had evaporated, replaced by a sickly, sweating panic. He looked at Paola, whose expression had morphed from smug superiority into cold, calculated terror. A man who was abandoning a cheating wife was a hero in their social circle; a man who abandoned his loyal wife and their biological child because of his own medical stupidity was a pariah.
“No,” Diego stammered, pointing a trembling finger at Dr. Salinas. “You’re... you’re covering for her. You’re part of some scheme—she must have paid you off!”
Dr. Salinas didn't raise her voice, but her eyes flashed with dangerous professional fury. “Mr. Diego, I am a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. Implying that I would falsify medical records and ultrasound timelines is not only defamatory, it is grounds for immediate legal action. If you doubt my assessment, I can print out the full developmental report right now, complete with the exact gestational age matching your surgery window to the day.”
Laura slid off the examination table, her bare feet touching the cold linoleum floor. She smoothed down the fabric of her simple cotton dress, lifted her chin, and walked slowly toward the door where Diego and Paola were trapped like cornered rats.
She stopped just an inch away from Diego. She didn't cry. She didn't yell. She looked at him with a profound, stinging pity that cut far deeper than any rage.
“You didn't want to trust me, Diego,” Laura said quietly, her voice steady and clear. “Because trusting me would mean you had to be a real partner. It was much easier to believe the worst about me because it gave you an excuse to pack your bags and run to Paola without feeling guilty.”
Paola’s face flushed a furious, ugly crimson. She stepped up, trying to salvage her crumbling dignity. “Don't act so high and mighty, Laura! Even if it is his kid, look at how fast he walked away from you! He didn't want you anymore. He wants me!”
Diego flinched as if he’d been struck by lightning. He looked at Paola—truly looked at her—not as an exciting escape from his marriage, but as the anchor dragging him down into public humiliation and financial ruin. The shiny fantasy of their illicit romance suddenly looked like a trap.
“Paola, shut up,” Diego muttered, his voice cracking.

“Shut up?!” Paola screeched, her voice pitching an octave higher. “Are you kidding me right now, Diego? You dragged me down here to watch you humiliate her, and now it turns out you’re just an idiot who doesn't know how birth control works? I am not going to be the laughingstock of the office because you couldn't be bothered to go to a follow-up appointment!”
Laura stepped past them into the hallway, leaving the two of them to tear each other apart in the cramped clinic room. As she walked down the corridor toward the exit, she felt a profound weight lift from her shoulders. The nightmare wasn't over, but the lie was dead. And for the first time in weeks, she was ready to fight back.
