Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Ten years later.

The gardens of the Westchester estate—fully restored to their original grandeur—were alive with music, laughter, and the hum of celebration.

Guests moved across the stone terraces, celebrating a double milestone: Lily’s high school graduation and Emma’s acceptance into Columbia University’s pre-med program, fulfilling a lifelong dream she had harbored since she was a little girl wanting to help people heal the way she had been healed.

I stood near the stone balustrade, holding a glass of aged bourbon, watching the festivities unfold.

Two young women walked up beside me.

Lily stood tall, radiant, carrying her mother’s graceful posture and bright smile. Beside her stood Emma, her striking emerald eyes shining with quiet confidence, wearing a tailored emerald dress that looked remarkably like the ones Grace used to wear.

"You're standing alone brooding again, Dad," Lily teased lightly, nudging my shoulder with her elbow. "Grandpa duties require you to actually mingle, you know."

"I'm not brooding," I smiled, wrapping an arm around each of their shoulders and pulling them close against my sides. "I'm just admiring my handiwork."

"Your handiwork?" Emma laughed, her voice melodic and warm. "Dad, Mrs. Gable and Auntie Margaret did all the catering."

"I provided the moral support and the credit card," I countered playfully.

We stood in silence for a moment, watching the sun dip below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and purple.

"Do you think she's watching?" Emma asked softly, her gaze drifting toward the quiet family cemetery nestled on the edge of the estate grounds, where Grace’s final resting place had been lovingly restored with a marble headstone bearing her true name.

I looked down at the two girls who had saved me from the cold, ruthless darkness of my own world.

"Every single day," I answered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of both their heads. "She's watching us, and she's prouder than we could ever imagine."

The past was behind us, the secrets were buried, and the future belonged entirely to the light.
