Chapter 8 - Healing the Wounds
The storm clouds parted by evening, allowing golden rays of sunset to flood through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Manhattan estate.
The chaos of the past week had settled into a profound, enduring quiet. The federal indictments against Richard Vance and the Vanguard Syndicate made front-page news across the country, effectively dismantling the shadow empire that had hunted my family for a decade.
I walked down the hallway toward the east wing nursery.
The door was propped open. Inside, Lily and Emma sat cross-legged on the plush rug, surrounded by a mountain of colored pencils, sketchpads, and dolls. They were laughing—a bright, carefree sound that chased away the last lingering shadows in the house.
Emma looked up as I stepped into the room. For a brief second, hesitation flickered in her emerald eyes, but then a small, tentative smile broke across her face.
"Daddy," Lily called out happily, waving a purple crayon in the air. "Look! Emma drew a picture of our family. That's you, that's me, and that's her!"
I walked over, kneeling beside them on the floor. I picked up the clumsy crayon drawing. It showed three stick figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.
"It's beautiful," I murmured, my throat tightening with emotion. I reached out, gently resting my hand on Emma’s dark curls. "You're a wonderful artist, sweetheart."
Emma leaned into my touch, just a little bit, resting her head against my shoulder. In that simple, trusting gesture, I felt the final piece of my broken heart click back into place.
Grace was gone, but her spirit—her fierce, protective, loving soul—lived on right here in these two little girls.

"Are we going to live in this big house forever?" Emma asked quietly, her tiny voice filled with a lingering trace of uncertainty.
"Forever," I promised, wrapping my arms around both of them and pulling them close. "Nobody is ever leaving. This is your home. You are my daughters, and nothing in this world will ever change that."
