Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The grand ballroom of the Greenwich Country Club was filled with the soft clinking of crystal glasses and the murmur of polite conversation. It was the annual hospital charity gala, the most prestigious social event of the year, and my father, Harold, was the guest of honor.

Harold and Diane stood near the stage, surrounded by a crowd of wealthy admirers, basking in the empty congratulations. Tyler stood beside them, dressed in a flawless tuxedo, his arm wrapped tightly around Lauren, who looked like a prisoner on display.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The crowd fell silent as a wheelchair clicked slowly across the polished hardwood floor.

I wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that flowed over my legs. My hair was swept back, and my face was set in a calm, unbreakable smile. Behind me walked Sarah Chen, Dr. Aaron Sterling, and Detective Sarah Miller with four state troopers.

"Bridget?" my mother gasped, her wine glass trembling in her hand. "What are you doing here? You should be in the hospital!"

"I came to celebrate, Mother," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent ballroom. "I came to celebrate the truth."

Harold stepped forward, his face darkening. "Get this girl out of here! She is mentally unstable, and she is disrupting a private charity event!"

"Actually, Harold," Detective Miller said, stepping into the light and pulling out a warrant. "We are here to execute an arrest warrant for Tyler Thorne for attempted murder, and an arrest warrant for yourself and Dr. Patricia Winters for conspiracy to obstruct justice and witness tampering."

"This is an outrage!" Tyler shouted, trying to step behind his father. "You have no evidence! My sister is a liar!"

"We didn't have evidence yesterday, Tyler," I said, pulling out my phone and tapping the screen.

The massive projector screen behind the stage—which had been showing a slideshow of Harold's hospital achievements—suddenly flickered to life.

The entire ballroom gasped.

The screen played the crystal-clear, high-definition security footage from the party. It showed the second-floor deck. It showed Tyler crowding me against the railing. It showed his hands hitting my shoulders, and the sickening moment the wood snapped, sending me falling to the rocks below.

But it didn't stop there.

The video continued, playing the audio of Harold crouching beside me: "You've embarrassed this family enough." It played the footage of Marcus running to wipe the server, and the recorded phone call between Harold and Dr. Patricia Winters, discussing the payment of fifty thousand dollars to sign the false statement.

Dr. Winters covered her face, letting out a sob of pure terror.

"Where... where did you get that?" Harold stammered, his face turning a horrific shade of purple.

Lauren stepped away from Tyler, her head held high as she walked over to stand beside my wheelchair. "I gave it to her, Harold. Because I want my son to grow up with a mother who has integrity, not a family of monsters."

"You... you traitorous bitch!" Tyler roared, lunging toward Lauren.

But before he could take a single step, two state troopers tackled him to the ground, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking the handcuffs into place.

"Tyler Thorne, you are under arrest," the trooper declared.

As they dragged Tyler out of the ballroom, his screams of rage echoing off the high ceilings, Detective Miller approached my father.

"Harold Thorne, you have the right to remain silent," she said, cuffing his hands as the wealthy guests stared in absolute horror and disgust.

My mother fell to her knees, weeping into her silk dress, completely abandoned by the social circle she had sacrificed her daughter to protect.

I looked at my father as they led him away. For the first time in his life, he had nothing to say. He looked old, small, and utterly defeated.

"The party is over, Dad," I whispered.
