Chapter 4 - The Weakest Link

The physical rehabilitation center at Yale New Haven was a place of sweat, tears, and agonizing progress. Three weeks after the surgery, I was suspended in a harness over a treadmill, my legs swinging limply as two therapists manually moved my feet forward, trying to retrain my brain to recognize the pattern of walking.
"Good, Bridget. Keep your head up. Focus on the horizon," the lead therapist, Marcus, encouraged.
Every movement was an uphill battle against my own body. The pain in my lower back was a constant, dull roar, but the tingling in my toes had slowly spread to my calves. I was fighting for every millimeter of nerve recovery, driven by a burning desire to walk into that courtroom and look my brother in the eyes.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the doors to the rehab gym opened, and a woman in a heavy trench coat stepped inside. She had her hood pulled low, but as she stepped into the light, I recognized the pale, anxious face of Lauren, my brother’s wife.
She stood at the edge of the gym, watching me struggle to take a single, supported step. Tears were visible in her eyes.
"Hold on, Marcus," I gasped, my chest heaving. "Give us a minute, please."
The therapists lowered me into my wheelchair, giving us some privacy. Lauren walked over slowly, her hands trembling as she pulled a small envelope from her pocket.
"Bridget..." Lauren whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm so sorry. I’m so, so sorry."
"Why are you here, Lauren?" I asked, keeping my voice cold and steady. "Did Harold send you to offer me another settlement? To tell me I’m dramatic again?"
"No!" she gasped, dropping to her knees beside my wheelchair. "I couldn't sleep. Every time I look at Mason, I think about what Tyler did to you. And... and he’s starting to do it to Mason, Bridget. He screamed at him yesterday, threw a glass against the wall because Mason dropped a toy. Tyler is getting worse. He thinks he’s untouchable now because his father’s lawyers are protecting him."
She grabbed my hand, her palms cold and sweating. "I can't let my son grow up to be like him. I can't let him be a monster."
"Then help me, Lauren," I said, leaning closer. "Tell the police what you saw. Tell them Tyler pushed me."
"I can't just testify," she sobbed. "Harold threatened to take Mason away from me. He said he has judges in his pocket, that he’ll declare me an unfit mother and ensure I never see my son again if I betray the family."
"He's bluffing, Lauren. He uses fear because he’s terrified of the truth," I said, squeezing her hand. "But we have a way to stop him. We need the cloud backup of the security footage. Tyler’s laptop has the credentials. If you can get me those login details, we can download the video. Once that video is public, Harold won't have the power to touch you or Mason."
Lauren stared at me, her eyes wide with terror. "Tyler keeps his laptop locked in his study. He has a passcode on the door."
"You know him, Lauren. You know his patterns," I pleaded. "For Mason’s sake. Don't let Tyler destroy another life."
She stood up slowly, wiping her tears. She looked at the envelope in her hand, then placed it in my lap.
"The password to his study is Mason’s birthday," she whispered. "The laptop password is the name of his first boat—The Sovereign. I’ll get the cloud credentials, Bridget. But you have to promise me... you have to promise me you’ll protect my son."
"I promise you, Lauren," I said, my heart pounding with a sudden, fierce determination.

As she walked out of the gym, I opened the envelope she had left behind. Inside was a handwritten journal of every instance of abuse, every threat Tyler had ever made against her, and a list of the bank accounts Harold had used to pay off the party guests.
The defense was crumbling. And we finally had the key to their destruction.
