Chapter 9 - Breaking the Mold

Two weeks after the breach, the Westchester estate looked entirely different.

The armed guards at the gates remained, but inside, the heavy iron doors were propped open. Sunlight flooded through the massive windows, warming the marble floors. A playroom had been built on the ground floor, filled with bright colors, finger-paintings, and books.

Ricardo sat at the head of the long dining table, but instead of reviewing ledgers of syndicate business, he was helping Leo build a towering fortress out of wooden blocks.

I stood by the kitchen doorway, watching them with a quiet smile, holding a cup of coffee.

Ricardo looked up, caught my eye, and excused himself from the floor. He walked over to me, his dark eyes softening as he reached out and gently brushed a lock of hair behind my ear.

"The restructuring of the syndicate is complete," Ricardo said quietly. "I'm stepping back from active enforcement, Clara. I'm turning the operations over to the council. I want a legitimate life. For Leo. And for us."

My breath caught. "Are you asking what I think you're asking?"

Ricardo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple silver band—no diamonds, no mafia grandeur, just a quiet promise of a real future.

"I told you the night we met that I wasn't offering you a job," Ricardo said, his voice steady and full of deep emotion. "I was offering you my life. Will you stay, Clara? Not just as Leo's guardian, but as my wife, and his mother?"

Across the room, little Leo held up a crooked wooden block tower and cheered, "Say yes, Clara!"

A warm tear slipped down my cheek, but my smile beamed brighter than the morning sun.

"Yes," I whispered, sliding the ring onto my finger. "I'm not going anywhere."
