Chapter 5 - The Confession in the DarkWe returned to the estate late that night. The drive had been silent, the heavy armor of the Escalade cutting through the empty highway like a tank. Once inside, Dante whisked Leo off to bed, leaving Ricardo and me alone in his private study—a cavernous room lined with leather-bound books and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark Hudson River.

Ricardo poured two glasses of scotch, held one out to me, and walked over to the window.
"You shouldn't have spoken out back there," Ricardo said, his back to me. "Salvatore is a dangerous animal. He looks for any sign of vulnerability."
"He was testing you," I said, walking over and setting my untouched glass on the desk. "And you reacted like a mafia boss. But underneath that, you're terrified that your enemies will use your son to get to you."
Ricardo turned slowly, his dark eyes reflecting the faint city lights across the water. "They already tried, Clara. Six months ago. A car bomb meant for my vehicle went off outside the daycare. Elena threw herself over Leo’s stroller. She died instantly."
The air left my lungs. The hardness in his face fractured, revealing an abyss of profound, unending sorrow.
"I built this empire to protect them," Ricardo whispered, walking closer until the distance between us vanished. "I thought money and power could build a wall high enough to keep death out. But I couldn't save her. And every time Leo cries, I feel like I'm failing her all over again."
Without thinking, I stepped forward and placed my hand gently over his chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thumping of his heart beneath the expensive fabric of his shirt.
"You can't fight death with guns, Ricardo," I murmured softly. "You fight it by staying present. By letting him know he’s not alone in the dark."

Ricardo looked down at my hand on his chest, then slowly raised his gaze to meet mine. For the first time since I met him, the terrifying mob boss dissolved, leaving only a man longing for warmth. He gently covered my hand with his own, his thumb brushing my knuckles in a slow, hesitant caress.
"Stay with us, Clara," he breathed, his voice dropping to a raw, intimate whisper. "Not just as a nanny. Stay."
