Chapter 6 - The Arrival of the Counsel

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal three-piece suit stepped into the penthouse. He carried a leather briefcase in one hand and an expression of profound, unshakable exhaustion on his face.

"Thank God you're breathing, Daniel," the man said, exhaling a heavy sigh as he tossed his briefcase onto the dining table. "The board is in absolute pandemonium. Marcus Sterling has been telling everyone you flipped your car into the harbor during a late-night cocaine binge."

"Marcus has always had a flair for creative fiction," Daniel replied coldly, stepping out from the kitchen area.

The lawyer—whose name badge read Julian Vance, Senior Partner—suddenly stopped, his eyes widening as he noticed me standing near the hallway archway. He blinked twice, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses.

"And... who is this?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with aristocratic skepticism. "An eyewitness? A liability?"

"This is Anna Bennett," Daniel said firmly, walking over to stand beside me. "She saved my life last night. And she saved my children from being liquidated by Marcus's clean-up crew."

Julian stared at me for three long seconds, taking in my faded jeans, my oversized diner hoodie, and the dried blood staining my sleeves. Then, slowly, a respectful nod inclined his head.

"My apologies, Miss Bennett," Julian said. "It takes a remarkable kind of courage to walk into Daniel’s orbit and survive. But surviving the night is the easy part. The hard part starts at ten o'clock this morning."

"The board meeting," Daniel said.

"Exactly," Julian confirmed, snapping open his briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of legal documents. "Marcus has already filed emergency probate petitions claiming you are mentally unfit and physically incapacitated, Daniel. He has enough proxy votes lined up to strip you of your CEO title, dissolve your voting shares, and take permanent custody of the twins under the Sterling Family Trust."

I stepped forward, my fists clenched. "They can't just steal someone's kids! That's illegal!"

"In the corporate courts of Boston, Miss Bennett, legality is simply a matter of who writes the bigger check," Julian replied grimly.

Daniel looked down at the documents, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. He reached out, lifting one of the papers, and a cold, predatory light gleamed in his blue eyes.

"They think I'm dead, Julian?" Daniel asked quietly.

"They're counting on it."

"Then let's give them a resurrection they'll never forget."
