Chapter 6 - The Forensic Truth

The state forensic pathology lab smelled of industrial bleach and formaldehyde—a sterile, unforgiving environment where secrets had no place to hide.
I stood in the observation gallery overlooking Suite B, holding Leo safely in my arms while Dr. Aris Thorne, a seasoned federal coroner with decades of high-profile casework under his belt, prepared his instruments. Below us, the heavy oak-and-mahogany coffin that my family had purchased for a closed-casket funeral sat resting on a stainless-steel hydraulic lift.
Elena stood beside me, her arms crossed, watching the team of technicians secure their protective gear.
"The federal custody order is locked in," Elena said quietly, breaking the silence. "The local prosecutor tried to file an injunction an hour ago, claiming federal overreach. I had our legal division drop the financial laundering portfolio onto his desk. He hasn't called back since."
"Good," I muttered, my eyes fixed on the casket. "Open it."
At Dr. Thorne’s signal, two technicians unlatched the heavy brass clasps of the coffin and slowly lifted the lid.
Even from the elevated gallery, the sight of my wife lying motionless inside the velvet-lined box struck me like a physical blow. Emily looked peaceful, her hair neatly brushed, dressed in a white gown chosen by my mother. But training kept the grief at bay long enough for the tactical observer in my mind to take over.
"Dr. Thorne," I spoke into the wall intercom. "Begin external examination. Focus on the neck, wrists, and fingernail beds."
Down below, Dr. Thorne adjusted his magnifying loupes and stepped up to the table. He gently lifted Emily's left hand, shining a high-intensity forensic UV light over her fingertips.
The white light illuminated what my mother and Caleb had tried desperately to hide. Deep, jagged purple bruising ringed her wrists, inconsistent with any natural medical emergency. And under her fingernails, microscopic traces of synthetic carpet fibers and human skin cells glowed brightly under the UV spectrum.
"Fascinating," Dr. Thorne's voice echoed through the intercom speakers. "Defensive wounds. Clearly sustained from someone grabbing her wrists with immense force while she fought back. Furthermore..."
He leaned closer to her neck, adjusting an optical scanner.
"...inspecting the submental tissue around the hyoid bone. Notice these micro-fractures, Captain Vance. This was not a childbirth complication. This was manual strangulation, cleverly staged to mimic post-partum medical failure."
The words hung in the sterile air of the lab like a falling axe.

Beside me, Elena let out a slow, controlled breath. "That changes everything. This moves from a conspiracy and medical negligence case straight to capital murder."
"And it gives us the exact leverage we need to break the final link in the chain," I said, turning away from the glass. I handed Leo gently to Elena, who cradled him with surprising maternal gentleness. "Hold him for a moment, Elena. I'm going down to interview the accountant."
