Chapter 4 - The Digital Trail and the Breach

The front doors of the estate blew open with a deafening crash that rattled the glass chandeliers overhead.
"CID! Federal agents! Secure all exits, nobody moves!"
Master Sergeant Elena Vasquez’s sharp, authoritative voice cut through the cavernous hallways like a scalpel. The cavalry had arrived, right on schedule.
I tucked Emily's journal safely inside my tactical jacket, scooped Leo back up into my arms, and strode out of the nursery into the second-floor landing. Looking down over the wrought-iron banister, I watched a rapid-deployment team of four federal investigators sweep the ground floor.
My mother and Caleb were already being detained against the living room wall. Caleb was shouting protests about constitutional rights and unlawful entry, while my mother stood frozen, her face drained of all color, staring up at the stairs as if she had just seen a ghost.
"Daniel!" Elena called out, spotting me standing on the landing with my infant son cradled against my chest. Her tactical vest was zipped tight, her service weapon holstered securely, and her eyes scanned the perimeter with razor-sharp efficiency. "Situation report! What do we have?"
"We have a homicide, Elena," I said, descending the stairs slowly to protect Leo from the chaotic energy below. "And we have a state-sanctioned kidnapping conspiracy orchestrated by my own family."
I reached the bottom step and handed the leather-bound journal directly to her.
"Read the final entries. And check the property logs—my mother and Caleb set up a private, unlicensed birth room right here in the east wing to bypass state medical registries. Emily didn't die of natural childbirth complications. She was systematically isolated, poisoned, and silenced because she caught Caleb embezzling trust funds and threatened to expose them."
Elena flipped the journal open, her eyes darting across the hurried, desperate handwriting. The hardened expression on her face grew darker with every line. She looked up slowly, locking eyes with me.
"We are bypassing local jurisdiction entirely," Elena declared, her voice carrying across the silent, tense room so everyone could hear. "With these exhibits and the digital trail on that burner phone, I am officially placing this estate under federal lockdown. Every single room, server, and medical waste disposal site on these grounds is now a federal crime scene."
Caleb thrashed against the agents holding his arms. "You can't do this! You have no warrant for the grounds, this is a private family estate!"
"We have exigent circumstances and immediate danger to a minor," Elena snapped back, gesturing to the two agents holding him. "Cuff him and read him his rights. And detain Katherine Vance for questioning regarding obstruction of justice and suspected foul play."
As federal agents swarmed the study, cataloging files and securing the perimeter, Elena stepped closer to me, lowering her voice. "What about the body, Daniel? The funeral home downtown has already scheduled the cremation for tomorrow morning."

A cold, calculated fury settled deep within my chest. They weren't just trying to cover up a murder; they were trying to burn the evidence into ash before I could even say a proper goodbye.
"Not on my watch," I said, my voice steady and ice-cold. "We're going to stop that cremation right now."
