Chapter 8 - The Matriarch's Return

Eleanor Brooks stopped dead in the center of the pristine kitchen, her diamond-encrusted rings flashing under the recessed lighting as she braced her hands on the marble island. Her gaze swept over the luxurious space before landing directly on me with the force of a physical blow.
"So it's true," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "The little gold-digging parasite crawls back out of the woodwork, and you immediately hand her the keys to the kingdom? Have you completely forgotten what she did to this family, Ethan?"
"Watch your tone, Eleanor," Ethan stepped forward, his voice dropping into a lethal, arctic register that commanded instant obedience. "You are in my house. And you are speaking to my wife."
My heart skipped a beat at the word wife. I looked at Ethan, but his gaze remained locked on his aunt.
Eleanor scoffed, a harsh, grating sound. "Wife? You never legally married her before she vanished, and if you have any shred of corporate sense left, you certainly won't marry her now! Do you have any idea what the board is saying? The stock dropped two points this morning after rumors leaked that you have an illegitimate child living in this estate with an unverified drifter!"
"The board can go to hell," Ethan replied calmly, though his fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were white. "My personal life is not subject to shareholder approval. And Emily is not a drifter. She is the mother of my son."
Eleanor turned her sharp gaze back to me, narrowing her eyes into slits. "Oh, I'm sure she is. A convenient little insurance policy, popped up right when Ethan’s net worth broke ten billion. How much did it cost you to stage this whole theatrical reunion, Emily? Did you coach the boy to say those exact words in the diner, or was that your own special brand of manipulation?"
That was the breaking point.
Six years of running, six years of fear, six years of protecting my son from women like her—all of it dissolved into a blinding white heat.
I stepped past Ethan, planting my hands firmly on the marble counter just as she had, leaning forward until our faces were inches apart.
"Listen to me very carefully, Eleanor," I said, my voice eerily quiet, carrying a terrifying stillness that made the older woman recoil half an inch. "You can insult me all you want. You can call me a gold digger, a parasite, a drifter. I don't care. But the moment you imply that my son is a pawn or that I coached him to do anything, I will strip every single share, asset, and voting right you hold on this board through a custody and civil litigation war that will make your worst nightmares look like a walk in the park."
Eleanor’s mouth dropped open. She stared at me as if I had suddenly grown a second head. In her entire life, nobody from my background had ever stood up to her—let alone threatened her corporate standing in her own nephew's house.
Ethan watched me, a slow, dark, incredibly approving smile spreading across the corners of his mouth.
"You... you insolent little—" Eleanor sputtered, pointing a shaking finger at me.
"Get out," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into a command that brook no argument. He pointed toward the double doors of the foyer. "You are no longer welcome in this house, Eleanor. If you ever speak to Emily or my son again, I will personally vote you off the board and strip your security clearance before sunset."
Eleanor’s chest heaving with rage, she grabbed her designer handbag, glared at both of us with pure, unadulterated hatred, and turned on her heel, storming out of the house. The heavy front doors slammed shut behind her with a resounding crash that echoed through the quiet hills.
Silence descended upon the kitchen once more.
I let out a long, shaky breath, suddenly realizing I was trembling from head to toe. I gripped the edge of the marble counter to steady myself.
Ethan stepped up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. He buried his face in my neck, breathing in my scent.
"Remind me never to get on your bad side," Ethan murmured against my skin, a low, warm chuckle vibrating through his chest.

"I mean every word," I whispered, leaning back into his embrace, letting the warmth of his body anchor me. "Nobody touches my son."
"I know," Ethan whispered softly, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He reached up, cupping my face with both hands, his storm-gray eyes shining with a fierce, unwavering devotion. "And nobody touches you ever again either."
